  • Glad to find this group!

    Hi everyone,
I'm glad to have a group who understands what a great time being in the "50's" can be. At 55, I am ready to be the best "me" I can be. I had success with Atkins before (6 yrs. ago) but need to make it final this time. I am starting all over again, but this time it is for life.

I have already found such good info here that will make this journey much better and more successful this time around.

Here's to water, exercise and mutual support!

Re: Glad to find this group!

Hi everyone, I've been reading some pretty amazing posts tonight. Being 56, I have discovered that my body doesn't want to do what my mind thinks it should! So I took up yoga about 2 years ago which has helped.

I love to garden and after seeing the photos of the raised beds I am so jealous! I have clay soil and really would like to build raised beds. I found some great corners at Lee Valley.com, now I just need to talk my husband into it, or I could do it myself. We are also in the process of building two small ponds connected by a stream. Can't wait till they are done.

I've only been on Atkins since Monday and I won't weigh myself till Friday. What I'd like to find is ideas for breakfast. I got a shake idea from one young lady and since I don't have a lot of time on the mornings I work, they'd have to be quick. Scrambled eggs get boring after awhile. Anyway, guess I'd better head to bed, 5:30 comes quick!
          talk to you soon! Suzanne

Re: Glad to find this group!

Suzanne, so glad you joined us!

You really do need to get started in square foot gardening! It's the most fun gardening I've ever done! I would never go back to row gardening again. What is nice is that I can even sit in a chair and work in mine! I hate to admit it, but I sure do appreciate that at my age (61 in May).

The ponds sound GREAT! I'd love to have one, but hubby isn't that wild over the idea, so it probably won't happen. Maybe I'll settle for a pretty yard fountain some day.

Check out the Induction recipes in the recipe section of the board. You're sure to find some breakfast ideas you like.

Re: Glad to find this group!

Good morning Sunny! Up late this morning! Man alive, that's what happens when I stay up till 11:30 doing income taxes .

When you mentioned the fountain, I had to tell you, that's what we started with! We have one on our front porch where we sit on hot days, and I have one on the pool deck as well. My husband likes the sound of trickling water and so do I, it also helps mask the traffic noise. That's one of the main reasons we have the fountains

I will check out the recipe section. I've been on Linda's web site, but I noticed she eats a lot of hamburger for breakfast. I've never really cared what any of us ate for breakfast, as long as we ate something, but variety is the spice of life, so they say!

I'll see how my first weigh-in goes tomorrow. I'm excited! cause I feel different. And tomorrow is when my son and husband come on board. I'll be "living proof" for them that Atkins works. It's funny cause it was my husband's idea to look into Atkins because one of his co-workers was talking about how much weight she lost and the food she eats. And my son is geared up because he sees how excited I am about this WOE. I'm still waiting for my new Atkins book to arrive, since I'll have to return the 1997 version to the library soon.

Well, I hope you have a wonderful day Sunny. Let me know, if you would, how high the sides of your gardens are ok? Actually the size of them too if you could, I may just order those corners I saw on the Leevalley website!

Re: Glad to find this group!

hi Fancy -- I have 2 rasied beds which produce enough for feed the 3 of us and I have enough tomatoes that I canned 20 quarts last year. Here is a pic of what I have -- I took 4 pressure treated boards - screwed them together and filled them with dirt - nothing spectacular, but they work. I filled them with good quality garden soil, and this year I added organic soil (manure) - it has finally stopped smelling so hopefully I can get everything planted tomorrow!

This year one whole side of the garden is going to be just tomatoes because we use alot of them during the year -- I have 8 plants - 6 are large tomatoes, 1 is a roma and 1 is a patio tomato. The other half will be planted in radishes, green onions, turnips, lettuce, green and wax beans, and on the small burm right beside the raised bed I have asparagus and in potato pots I have potatoes and turnips (potatoes for my mother & the hubs)

Last year I had colored peppers also but I can get them from the produce stand up the street 4 @ 1.00 and they are the size of softballs, so I won't waste the space - my peppers never got very big. Good luck with your garden

Re: Glad to find this group!

Wow, Carole, you sure canned a lot of tomatoes! We aren't able to plant usually till late May and have to start covering things in mid Sept., but I've got some English cukes sprouting indoors, and have sown peppers and tomatoes too. How do you store the turnips, and are they the yellow rhutabagas or white small turnip? Lots of questions eh? (Sorry about the "eh". It's the in me!)
Also, what kind of pots do you plant potatoes in? That sounds like a lot less work than digging them out of quasi-cement in the fall!

If I can, I will buy bulk vegies from the Mennonites around here. I just ran out of my frozen rhubarb and I'm sure I could even trade homemade bread for rhubarb with someone! I may have to start baking again, I just have to keep my 2 men away from it, since they are doing Atkins too!

Oh, just one more question, honest About how high are your sides. they look about 10 inches? Talk to you soon, Suzanne

Re: Glad to find this group!

I found potato bins (Potato Bin buy from Gardener's Supply) and ordered them...that's what I will plant the turnips in. Originally I was going to plant potatoes for mom & DH but you are suppose to plant them Good Friday and that was a couple weeks ago, so I will plant (purple/white) turnips. I also love rutabaga and eat them as often as I can talk mom into them. We'll keep the turnips in a box with torn paper out in the garage until it gets too cold then we'll put it downstairs in the unfinished part of our basement.

I understand the "eh" and still say it quite often - I lived is Western NY for 10 years 90 miles from Buffalo so I heard and said it often! We would run to Toronto quite often to see friends or just to go to dinner, spend the night and go back home.

One of the garden boxes is 10" high and the other is 12" high -- I built the one closest to the corner to begin with but found out quickly it wasn't big enough for what we wanted to grow - so I went back to the lumberyard and got another board but it was smaller - so I just used it anyway because it was too much hassle to take it back and get another. Each section is 10' long - so I have 20' of planting space.

It's really too early here also to plant but I have some things in peat pots that have been growing for a copule months. I have beans on the vine inside because I planted them so long ago...they are about 3 - 4 inches long! And I have 2 blossoms on the cucumber inside also! I'm hoping to get everything planted by the weekend - either than or I'm going to have to plant the tomatoes in individual containers because they are huge (store bought 2 weeks ago). Home Depot had a deal where you bought 1 tomato plant and got another free -- so I got a total of 8 - paid for 4...good deal).

I wish you well with your garden
                        Carole
