Thank you 2big for your sterling work in rallying the over 50's troops into asking for this forum to reopen.

Now it is up to us all to keep up the momentum and make this forum active and able to answer any special needs or help us solve any special problems that we 50+ Atkineers might experience in following the Atkins WOL.

Thanks, 2Big. 50 is a great place to be and we deserve a special place to discuss our Atkins successes and get peer support for our tough times. I've been through the HRT, anti-depressants, and Blood Pressure medicine and it definitely hurt my weightloss progress. Now I'm off of it all and feel better than ever. Somehow, I don't think many people under oh say 45 would appreciate the frustrations involved with all those meds, not to mention a constantly declining metabolism if left to itself.

The fact that we can keep up with our exercise and weightloss as if we were 25 is amazing to me. I never thought I would be getting on a bike and riding 25miles at age 40 let alone 55, but I'm doing just that on May 7.

I look forward to hearing more from those over 50 (or close to it in Bren's case).

Although I hang out on the exercise challenge board, I do peek in here from time to time, what being 54 and almost 55!

Just had a raft of tests done and am going to see the doctor on Monday so am holding my breath so to speak. The only test I am concerned about is my cholesterol. It had been running a tad high. Hopefully it is back under control.

Re: having a harder time losing the weight......when I stick to the Atkins plan 100%, I have no problems losing weight. Unfortunately I do enjoy my evening cocktail and that plays havoc with my appetite control and that makes is extremely difficult to keep from having all those little "treats" (I am a chocolate addict) right along with my DH who does not have to watch what he eats as carefully as I do. Ahhhh, to be sure, a vicious little cycle which I really do not see as ending in the near future.

Fortunately I am only about 5 pounds from my goal so I am not getting hysterical about my not being “there”. Yeah it would be nice to be there, but that means I would have to give up my G&Ts and right now, given that I have given up smoking.....yup its been 1 year and 6 months....I am not ready to give up anything else for a bit.

You know it’s a funny thing……….when I was facing giving up smoking I thought I would never succeed……after all I did try several times before I actually did it. Now, should anyone ask , “do you miss smoking?”, I must say that 99.9% of the time I truly do not. There is still the occasional moment when, out of the blue, the urge for a cigarette strikes. Fortunately those moments are fleeting and very controllable. Maybe some day the same thing can be said for my chocolate addiction???????

This was always the friendliest, "feels like home" forum on the board. I'm glad it's back!

53 and new to all this

This looks like the spot for me. 9 years ago I had trolley run up the back of both legs - result 2 years of ****, lots of weight piled on and then operation on both Achilles tendons. I was never fat, but loved walking and did about 8km a day.

Then, bang, I couldn't walk at all. I started Atkins September 2005, lost 11 kg (24.5 lbs) in induction and have lost a steady 1kg (2.2lbs) since then - except lastr week I lost 2! Now 16 kg lighter in just 7 weeks.

I'm just delighted, what happened to it being harder to lose weight after 50? I never much liked fruit anyway, I've always been a munch on a raw vege person. Chocolate and potatoes are my downfall, I have to be vigilant all the time not to slip.

Signing up for the gym this week, hopefiully that will keep my 1 kg per week ticking along. I hope to be down to 60kg (133lbs) by June next year, or at least by Christmas 2006. It's taken me 9 years to get this fat, so it's going to take a while to shift it.

What say we nominate Dr Atkins for saintood?!
