  • Let's get real!

:wave This room is called 50+ for a reason. We're no longer 20 years old and can drop 10 to 15 pounds in a weekend!

In April, I had my annual checkup and my doctor order several test to make sure I'm still alive. She order thyroid, diabetes, cholestrol and kidney. I think I donated enough blood for a blood transfusion. Anyway, I went back the 19 of May to get my results and saw my regular doctor.

He was very happy with my colestrol, uphappy with my blood pressure, and said everything else was just fine. My HRT was way out of wack, and the meds were changed last month. Needless after being on the same HRT for 20 years a change was way over due. Now I'm feeling better, and almost back to my old self.

We talked about my weight coming off very slowly. He told me, I'm no long 20 (good point LOL), get a grip because the weight won't come off fast. I don't have that much weight to lose (about 35 pounds) and the less you need to lose the slower it is to take off. He also said if I lose the weight slowly, my eating habits will be more effective and the weight should stay off. I work out in a gym at least 3 days a week and try to get in 5 days a week. My doctor stressed to forget about the scale (they lie anyway) and use a messureing tape and have a FAT test done about every 2 months.

He told me I would notice a big change in the way my cloths fit and that means I'm getting healthier and the fat is going away. I told him, I am noticeing a big change in the way my clothes fit, and putting on my "smaller" jeans is no longer an "Olympic Event".

He did give me a very good point to think about. Being older, the weight doesn't come off as fast, and we need to think in LONG term. If you only lose 1 pound a week for 52 weeks, that's 52 pounds a year! We sure didn't put this weight on overnight and we sure aren't going to take it off overnight.

So do what I'm doing. Hang in there, stay on the Atkins plan, and give each other support because we CAN DO IT!!!!!!!

    That is so true :yes.

Even though I do climb on the scale most days I am only doing it out of interest and it doesnt upset me if it stays still for several weeks at a time - as I know if I stick to Atkins 'by the book' I will get there eventually.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

      Re: Let's get real!

I'm new here, and I just wanted to post about the scales. I have spent 40 years weighing myself every morning religiously - and yoyo dieting myself to over 300 lbs. I just restarted Atkins yesterday, and although I weighed myself yesterday to find out my start weight, I don't plan to weigh myself again.

I find if I haven't lost as much as I expected, I get really discouraged - and quit. If I have lost well, I just use that as an excuse to cheat!!

So, I am going to follow the plan to the best of my ability, and let the fat fall where it may. If my clothes get looser, I will assume I'm doing OK - but I am sick of my scale being my only measure of worth - and I'm not going to take it any more!!!!

As a side note - both my parents were overweight, and I remember them being on diets my entire life. My Mom died of cancer, and even though she had been sick for two years - she was obese when she died - her body was going to hang on to that fat no matter what. Also, I found a notebook while cleaning out her house, and in it was her weight, (and my Dad's) written down faithfully, every Monday morning FOR THIRTY YEARS. I saw their struggle with the scales, written down in that notebook - and all it did was make them feel bad.

I'm not going to do it - I too am going to hang in there with Atkins, and do my best - that's all I can hope for.

          Re: Let's get real!

I think we need to realize that we're not just doing this for weight loss; we're doing this FOR OUR HEALTH. To age well; to avoid those so-called inevitable aches and pains of aging.

Eating wholesome, nutritious meats, fruits, veggies and exercise. There is no other way!! It truly *is* possible to turn back the clock.

I so agree with what you said Betty.

The weightloss is almost a by-product of becoming healthier by eating our Atkins
