  • the 'freshman 15'

Not a teen myself...not even close..old enought to be the mother of one! but i saw this news serial on our local TV news tonight and thought it was very interesting. it talks about he 'freshman 15' phenomenon. most new college students gain at least 15 lbs in their first year at college.

It's not a low carb advice article, but has a couple of good tips i thought it was worth posting here:

I know all about that freshman 15. I am a sophmore attending college in North Carolina and last sememster I had gained 15 plus 5 pounds by the end of the semester!! its due to late night studying and eating to aide in the stress! luckily, I got all of it off over the summer at a busy Job working with kids. This time I plan on minimizing the freshman 15 with The atkins plan.

Yeah, every year since college started, I gained about 15-20 a SEMESTER. It was due to eating junk food... of course, and having an insane sleep schedule. I think messed up sleep schedules really do make losing weight very hard. Doing all-nighters to study or do papers/projects really runs you down. Makes you get sick more often, also.

I've noticed that when I meet up with my friends from High School (it's my first year in college, so not that much time has passed) it does look like they've gained weight. They usually comment on the fact that I've lost eighty pounds, and it's wierd trying to find the right thing to say. I think because I was already losing as I went into college and learned to "cook" with the microwave that helped me most. Well, the gym too!

good for you. just accept thier compliments about the great job you have done working to shrink yourself. You know how they are feeling about thier gained weight and yoiu know how you felt before you made the commitment to lose your pounds when anybody brought your weight up. when they are ready they will ask you for details so they too can shed those pounds and when they do be ready to assist them learn about Atkins.

            Happy lwo carbing.

              Re: the 'freshman 15'

Its SOO easy to gain that 15 pounds though. The cafeteria at my school has nothing but junk food. Waffle maker, yogurt machine, ice cream bar, pizza, fries, hamburgers, chicken strip. And its all so GOOD!

Well, I guess the good thing about this diet then is that you can have those burgers now, just sans bun.

Eek, you would think so, but the meet is so-so at best. I try and stay away from any of the ground beef there. Not only do i have no idea whats in it, it tastes like **** to boot.

What i'd do for a BBQ!

Well, does your dorm/apartment allow for things like George Foreman grills? I saw one at Macy's for $18 and I might try it once I get sick of eggs, etc.
