  • And I thought I knew everything

Me and my mum always have massive atkins arguments.

Mum: so when are you stopping this diet then?
Me: Its moreso a way of life
Mum: are you getting enough carbohydrates for a growing girl?
Me: Yes I eat 20g of carbs a day
Mum: No you don't, you don't eat bread or pasta or anything!
Me: Actually vegetables have carbs in them
    Mum: What?
Me: Yes, I eat 20g of carbs a day in vegetable form. Think of it this way, a potato has loads of carbs doesn't it? Thats what most people relate high carb to isn't it? And a potato is a vegetable. Other vegetables just vary in carb content.
Mum: But you're not eating potatoes.
Me: Yes, I know, that was an example.
Mum: But what about these vitamins you're taking, you must be deficient in something to have to take vitamins.
    Me: Uhhhh..... true.
*cue happy sadistic face that my mum thinks my diet is deficient and bad for me*

    Sorry to hear that Amy.
My mum was the same a couple of years ago, (maybe all british women are the same).

Two years later, my mother has finally come to terms with it all! Actions do speak louder than words. Go to your doctors fairly regularly and get your blood tested for Cholesterol, Urate Levels and just general blood pressure, when you explain to your mother that your levels have gone down (this will happen) That should eventually make your mum happy.

It never ceases to amaze me of how easy and how effective this ***diet*** is!!

I have since re-gained a bit of weight, but that is soon to be coming off again!

Ummm, actually, let me help you here.

Me: "Actually, vitamin supplementation is strongly recommended for EVERYONE, regardless of the way that you eat. With soil depleted like it is from over-use and all of the chemicals the food we eat is treated with, and the fact that it sits in warehouses for days depletes it in nutrition. It's been proven over and over again that the grown food we eat isn't as nutritious as it was years ago. Vitamin supplementation should be a part of *everyone's* day because statisically speaking, most everyone is deficient in several things. It's almost impossible to get the USRDA of vitamins and minerals from just the food we eat." *cue smug teenage face who just gave her mother a lesson in nutrition*

I moved from Cairns to Melbourne to get away from my Mum,

That;s the equivalent of moving from canada to Mexico :P lol

Just remember one thing, a potato is a tubor not a vegetable.
No body should eat potatos! lol

This is from the book (emphasis mine)...

"The foods you will be eating are tasty and nutrient-rich. But in starting people on my program, I have found that their vitamin and mineral reserves are often so depleted from the way they were eating before that it frequently takes a week or two of supplementation to build them up again."

So aside from what Brook said, you're not taking supplements because Atkins if deficient. Your taking supplements because your previous way of eating was deficient.

Also tell her that while Atkins is a way of life, induction isn't. The other phases are just as important, in some cases even moreso than induction.

due to the lack of vitamins and minerals in vegetables in this days everybody has to take a suplements. Pollution, transgenic, antibiotics in animals, all these results in low quiality food.
