Hi everyone. I've done a bit of reading online about the atkins diet and decided that i'm going to try it as of monday. Atkins diet is probably not the right thing for me... i'm not extremely overweight... i'm 5'4 about 132 pounds. Most of you are probably asking why on earth am i even considering atkins diet? I'm asian and not that tall so being at that weight i am considered overweight. I've wanted to lose weight for ages but haven't really gotten around to it. I recently went overseas for 5 weeks and came back and none of my tshirts would fit me! I guess being overseas it was winter so i didn't notice much change, when i got back home it was 38C, i went to get change into my summer clothes and everything was too tight. My goal weight is about 115 pounds. Is it ok to be on atkins just to lose 17 pounds? I read up on the disadvantages of atkins and it says you get loose skin after all the weight drops off. Is this the case for most of you or does that happen to older people?

welcome to the board the skin issue will depend on your elasticity and how stretched you skin is now.

you can do Atkins to lose no pouunds it is a life time eating program of contolling your blood sugar through eating healthy csarbs. Maybe you might want to read Dr Atkins book first and then start when you know how and why it works.

      Starting atkins

You could start atkins just by the info you get online; my wife and I did. All you need to know is the acceptable food list from either this website or the atkins website. I wish I started atkins when I only had 17 lbs to lose. I definitely recomend you read the book; it's far more interesting then I thought it would be and it helps alot. The best of luck and God Bless!

Hello and welcome. Atkins doesn't work for everyone, but we'd be happy to help you give it a shot. You can get started with the FAQs here or the How To Do Atkins section on www.atkins.com.

Many of us have found the additional scientific information in Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution (2002) makes the diet make more sense and easier to fit into our lifestyles. Who doesn't hate to be told to do something 'because I said so'? If you know why you're doing something you don't necessarily like, it makes it a little more palatible.

It's recommended that you move to Ongoing Weight Loss at 5-10 lbs, and you can expect to lose ~10% of your goal during Induction, so you should be fine doing the full program with 17lbs to goal. Of course, a healthy diet is beneficial to anyone at any weight.

                    I'm one of those DANDR-thumpers

No lecture from me, but I am curious as to how you see the diet. What all do you think you'll need to do?

I'm following atkins because it seems like a healthy way of dieting. I'm happy if i lose 5 kg after induction. Being asian i eat way too much carbs with all the rice and noodles my mum makes almost every single day. At least following the induction will make me learn to cut down on carbs and actually drink a decent amount of water a day (sometimes i'd be lucky to drink a cup or 2 in a day :no ) as well as eating more vegetables. I went to the atkins site and pretty much read all their articles and i've finally realised why after going to the gym 5 times a week for a hour hasn't resulted in any weightloss. I eat too much carbs... in fact before i even read about atkins i had no idea how many carbs were in the common foods i eat each day... all i'd do was look at the fat content on my cereal bar and think "wow 2.5g of fat! this must be very healthy" and i just checked the box recently and realised there was 38g carbs per bar!

I can attest to the asian habit of eating. Every night at dinner I used to eat 2-3 bowls of rice, piled high. All those crappy carbs weren't good for me. But now I dont even crave rice anymore. Good luck with this WOE
