Someone I know gave me some information about Splenda and the possible harmful side effects...depression, liver problems, kidney calcification, even reproductive problems! I don't know if anyone is interested in reading the links above, and I'll probably make some people irritated with me, but I do know I've had some pretty bad depression lately, and I had upped my amount of Splenda. I'm dropping it out to see if it clears up. I would type it out, but I'm not sure it would be ok, as its from the latest Shaklee newsletter. As they do not sell a sweetner, I don't think they stand to lose or gain anything by bringing these questions to the light. Just a thought.

Thanks for the info! I recently tried the new Diet Coke with Splenda and have had abdominal pain like I have not had in the months I have been on this WOE. Interesting.... :confused ...could there be a connection? I have had the Diet Coke the last two days and I feel yukky as well as my abdomen is distended. I am going to throw this stuff away and see if I feel better. I will post and let you know! I know better than to take artificial substances into my body! What was I thinking!! Thanks again for the wake up call.

I'm not trying to sound like some hardcore fanatic...

I was wondering, as products such as Splenda, even though they don't affect our blood sugar like sugar does, it is still artificially made.

One thing I've learnt about Atkins is to eat as many unprocessed foods as possible - foods as least modified by man as you can get - so would it not be better for us all to avoid all sugars if possible? After all, what is so different from "refined" white sugar to "artificially-made" sweeteners?

Maybe we could wait till we get to the OWL fruit rung to indulge in the more natural forms of sugar if we really can't do without it.

Back when Nutra-Sweet was first introduced, everyone thought it was the greatest thing in the world. It was thought to be a healthy alternative to saccharin.

Now we know better, and everyone is touting Splenda as the next great thing.

So of course, no one should be suprised when Splenda becomes a villian in the next few years.

Yay! I'm so glad to hear that people are truly considering this instead of being closed minded. I brought this up on a WW board once, and I thought I might get lynched. The responses were so negative. Personally, splenda does not agree with me, and it does cause cravings. I also get headaches when I have splenda.

I love Doctor Mercola. Has anyone read his book? He is the author of No-Grain Diet. You guys should check out his website at www.mercola.com. The book is great. He's very knowledgeable. I just wish I could afford the grass fed beef and raw milk cheese he recommends. His diet is not far off from Dr. Atkins. I guess the main difference is he wants us to have more veggies, including green juices, and it's a bit cleaner. For instance, he recommends that someone who has health problems should avoid all dairy until they are well again.

I just read this interesting article this morning from a website called Women-to-Women. They advocate a low-carb diet and encourage us to stay away from processed foods, apparently including Splenda. It gave me some food for thought.

A more natural alternative to Splenda is Stevia which is a natural substance. It is expensive, but it only takes a tiny amount to sweeten food or drink. Stevia is categorized as a diet supplement, not a sweetner, but it does a great job of sweetening.

Just thought I'd throw in my 2 pennies on this one...

First of all, we are not talking pure chlorine here. That would be insane. We are talking about a compound that has chlorine molecules in it. This is a VERY IMPORTANT difference. I don't see people dying because they eat salt (which is sodium CHLORIDE).

If we compare apples to apples, Splenda was aproved for sale in Canada (yeah, that backwater place!) for more than 10 years before it was approved in the US.


Honestly, I don't find any credibility in what he is saying, and I'm not even a big Splenda fan.

I used splenda in the first 2 weeks of starting atkins, by the third week I cut it out and any other artificial food (at least as much as possible). I don't know if it's the lack of splenda or just the cleaner induction, but I have felt SO MUCH better since going completely clean. I'm not saying that's what everyone else should do, but it certainly works for me. :yes

I hope you guys know that those anti-Splenda articles are a hoax.
Splenda's been in Canada for years and there's nothing wrong with it.

The reason you need to "limit" intake of Splenda is not because it's bad for you. Its because sweet-tasting foods can trigger insulin responses...like just smelling food can make you salivate.
Also by not using sweetener, you begin to taste the natural sweetness of foods and everything starts tasting better.

Once you lose your taste for sugar you will also lose cravings for sugar.

Hoax or not, Splenda is still an artificially-created product. Sure there are lots of foods that are made by man from the primary product eg wheat -> bread/pasta etc. but haven't you noticed that Atkins is a WOE that focusses on eating as much natural and wholesome foods as possible?

If you think about it, all the foods that we add back into the diet through OWL, are natural foods or foods in their natural state as grown or produced (with the exception of alcohol).

So if we can learn to NOT use any artificial sweetener and rely on the natural sweetness of veggies and fruits, then why not?

Using Splenda in the stead of sugar is like giving methadone to break a drug habit - it doesn't really solve the issue - it simply replaces with another equally useless food.

After all, Dr A continually goes on about eating "nutritionally-dense" foods, so what nutrition does Splenda have? It's no different to white bread or white rice is it? (except maybe white rice may even have a few more nutrients than splenda)

Even Dr. Atkins himself enjoyed a dessert every now and then. There's nothing wrong with enjoying something sweet once in awhile.
