  • Do you ever?

Do you ever just look at people now and think, "oh my god, I can't believe they're eating that!" or "oh my god, how can they constantly be eating?"

I find myself doing this all the time, just appalled at what people eat, but that used to be me. That used to be me grabbing the donuts and then going to the candy dish 5 minutes later and every 5 minutes after that.

We have a candy dish in our department and somebody just filled it up and the same people just keep going over there every couple of minutes. And the one lady just had a full size candy bar before the dish was filled.

I am just appalled. I feel bad because I shouldn't judge...but I am appalled! It just seems so wrong. How can they do that to themselves?

I don't think you should judge them. If you went off of atkins for a week, you'd be doing the same thing again. I get this type of judgement against me all the time. At parties or work events, I don't touch a single thing, because I know as soon as I do, someone will be judging me. I am very sensitive to this.

I do it too. I think : how could they do that to themselves" and yes that was me. I often think about how much weight I have lost, and think how did I let it get so out of control. It was not hard, so now I can put myself in their shoes, and still hope for them that one day they can break the addiction like I did.

I always find myself appalled at what skinny people can eat. I know some very thin people who eat terrible stuff and eat constantly. The world just ain't fair.

The only time I look that way is when someone (aka DW) uses up my low carb dressings, kethchup, etc. in a sandwich or something equally loaded with carbs. It's not so much I can't believe they (she) are eating that, but just the dualism -- kind of like putting normal chocolate syrup on low carb ice cream. As for the rest of the world, I have enough to focus on my own food to be too aware of others.

That's one reason I started Atkins...I was constantly hungry and they stocked the office with lots of treats....so I was constantly eating them.

I don't judge, because its all I can do to stick to this WOE and be a good example. It scares me to see the pounds my one SIL is putting on, but at the same time, I know too well the unhappy place she is in emotionally right now, and know how easy it is to try to fix it with sugar.

                Re: Do you ever?

Do I ever! I want to just shake them and say, "WAKE UP!" But you know what? I used to be them, and I'd be asking them if I could have one of their donuts. But we got here because we decided to make the change. And they are the only ones who can make that decision for themselves.

I used to ask my wife, "am I as big as that guy over there?", to get a judge of how I looked. Now, at least, I don't do that anymore. I know I look better, I know I feel better. But I still have a long way to go.

But the thing about judging other people is, you don't know if they are continuing on their path of destruction, or they are on their own weight loss journey. They may be big, but maybe they were bigger. Maybe they've already lost 100 pounds. Maybe they are a member here. Maybe their loss has already inspired someone else to lose. That's the thing about being judgemental about someone you don't know, you just don't know.

                  Re: Do you ever?

I used to be one of them and it just reminds me that I have made the right decision to change my eating habits. This does not change the fact that I get aggrivated at what some people can eat and stay rail thin.

But you get the card you are dealt for a metabolism and its up to only me to deal with it in the correct mannor for a more healthy me.

                    Re: Do you ever?

Interesting question... The only thing I think is that eating that way is UNHEALTHY... It is up to each individual to eat the way they want to eat... And if they are lucky enough to NOT gain weight eating refined sugar... They are unlucky in that the food they eat will shorten their lives... As much as if they DID gain weight... At least I had an advance warning of ill health that was SSOO out there... I could not help but change the way I was eating... Those folks do not have that advantage...

On a side note... I had three back surgeries because of a prolapsed disc after I lost 100 pounds... When I was in the hospital the first time the surgeon's PA came in to discuss my need to loose weight (I have another 100 to go)... He was attempting to be delicate approching the subject and suggested that there "MAY BE" a need to loose some weight... I smiled at him and said... "Oh yes, I have already lost 100 pounds on Atkins and am working on the other 100 pounds!" He turned red, said "WOW, that is wonderful! Well.. I guess I don't need to even have this conversation with you..." He made a motion like he was locking his lips shut, smiled and left...

Okay I confess I do look into peoples shopping carts and yes I do snicker when I see a young Mom with a cart full of sugar and carbs and a couple of kids that are out of control due to sugar highs as she promises if they behave they will each get a soda and a candy... but I never say anything because I know how I would have reacted.

I feel like this is how people see me. Even now that I'm eating heathy foods. I still think people see me and go "Uhg! She shouldn't be eating at all! Someone take that from her!!"

I'm still jealous of people who can eat the sweets and chocolates. I know it's bad for them. I know it's bad for me. But I still love them. But, I think I'll love being thin more, so I pass on them.

                            Re: Do you ever?

I've felt like that before - especially when I first started Atkins. I would look at people like in the grocery store and think no wonder their fat when I would see what was in the buggy or even when I was out to eat.

Well, that was wrong of me. I guess since I thought I use to eat like that I could judge others as well. The truth is, it's just really hard to find your way to a good eating plan that actually works. It took me the last 15 years to find the right plan. So we just have to hope that everyone, in their own way & time will find the answer to their weight problems.

It's just really a hard road to travel - as we all know.
