  • Anyone else melting in Michigan?

How is everyone else holding up in this heat? I'm not doing so well . . . other than the fact that my weight is dropping because I'm too darned hot to eat! I made grilled venison steaks last night, but felt too overheated and nauseous to eat more than a couple of bites. All I wanted was a big ol' bowl of ice chips.

All you Texans and other Southern folks: How do you live like this?

I'm too hot to exercise, too hot to do anything. Can anybody give me any tips on getting exercise with keeling over from heat exhaustion? Or meal ideas that don't include my bursting into flames while standing over a hot stove or grill?

Last year, we only had 3 days that reached 90 degrees. This year, we've already had 14!

But if I keep complaining, do I lose my right to whine about the snow and ice in February?

I'm in Michigan too. Yes it's hot! It usually isn't the heat that bothers me too much it's the humidity. I will take it any day over Jan., Feb., March weather. Eat lots of ice pops. I have some made with Splenda that I bought at Meijer.

Re: Anyone else melting in Michigan?

I moved away from Michigan 10 months ago, and I'm in Florida now. Funny thing is, I was much sweatier in Michigan. Living here for 10 months, I really feel like I'm adjusting to the heat. I'm starting to like it! In Michigan, just as you start to get used to the cold, it gets hot, and as you start to get used to the heat, it gets cold. Your body never has a chance to adjust.

As far as cooking in the heat, I pull the grill up to my back door, fire it up. I open the door just long enough to check the food, flip it, or whatever. That way I'm not spending a lot of time outdoors in the sweltering heat. I used to do this in Michigan too in the winter. Me and hubby grilled in the snow all the time.

          Good luck!

Moved away from Michigan to california three years ago! But my family's been complaining about the heat too. I remember all winter looking forward to the summer, and then in the summer it was too friggin hot to want to do anything!! I've really been taking this california weather for granted, I only go outside to walk my dog and that's just about it. I'm hoping to moving back to michigan for grad school though, I miss it. At least the weather will give me something to complain about lol.

Texas is always hot and sticky! If you were not born into this climate it takes time to adjust. We do have heat related deaths. My husband works for Carrier so this Diva always has cold air...maybe that is what attracted me to him...but there was a time that I lived in a two bedroom one bath house with 10 other people and we had nothing more than a box fan for the window. Now that was hot especially when Mom would cook. I was raised in that home...and I miss the simple life with the exception to the hot sweaty nights.

Re: Anyone else melting in Michigan?

I too was raised in a house with 10 people and 1 window airconditioner and 1 window fan. We used the window fan upstairs where I was with 5 children. We put it backwards in the window at one end of the house and it would blow air into the window at the other end of the house and blow through both bedroom which were open to each other. I would lie on the bed with my head hanging off so I could get some of that breeze. We frequently get into the 90s during the summer here and a lot of those days are very humid. Now we just stay out of the heat indoors with our airconditioned houses with our blinds closed to keep the sun out and the units from overheating. Mine has some age on it so I'm trying to baby it a little.

But, I can certainly understand ya'll having a difficult time with that type of weather.
I don't know how ya'll deal with the winters you have. It's unusual we get much snow. We're more likely to get freezing rain than snow. Either way, we can't drive in it and just an inch of snow paralyzes our city. School is cancelled, the mall is closed, the whole nine yards.

Funny as it sounds.......OHIO is miserable! This has been the hottest year so far! We had almost 3 weeks straight of 90+ degree temps with the stickiest, nastiest humidity! and a couple days it got over 100 on top of all the humidity. Its nuts. I think everyone stayed in there homes. Now everyone is PRAYING for the hurricane to bring some our way, we're supposed to get some rain started late tonight. My entire yard and street for that matter has brown yards, ew.

Re: Anyone else melting in Michigan?

Melting in BC, Canada instead of Michigan. Today was not too bad but we get very hot summers here. This is how I beat the heat:

Window air conditioner in bedroom so I can sleep. This will actually cool most of my small house.

Bed time swimming at the lake (2 blocks away)

Mall Walking. On a really hot day go to an indoor mall and just walk and cool down.

Get up really early and take a walk.

My sister once lived in Oklahoma and she could not stand the summers there. She filled her bathtub with ice and cold water and dunked herself several times a day.

Cold salads, ice cold water, cold meats will all help.

I hate that about Michigan, one day it will be perfect weather, then the next day its snowing

Venison sounds good. Um, exercise in the AC. That is what I do. I know it isn't like how my brothers used to do...Wrap themselves up in plastic then push up the heat in the basement. I figure I am exercising..good enough. I feel sweat, so good enough.

In Arizona it was 112 tonight at 7 PM. Don't even say "Dry Heat" cause heat is heat. I miss NY weather and snow

Yup, that is another thing I do....Go somewhere, anywhere, so I can use their air conditioning not mine. Plus, it gets me out and doing stuff and it's free to look
