My husband and I just got back from whitewater rafting in West Virginia. It was AWESOME!!! I am so glad that I lost 40 pounds before going. I think it would have been a miserable experience if I hadn't lost any weight, as well as embarrassing. I had a little bit of a hard time getting back in the boat. I can't believe that we had such an exciting trip. I never would have thought of doing something like this before. I am so happy with my new WOL. I hope others read this and think of doing some fun things that they never thought of doing before this WOE. It was inspiring for me to do something like this.

How fun are you!
Look at you, going whitewater rafting! I'll bet that was just the most fun everrrrrrr! I am so excited to read what you've done through your weight loss success! It's reading experiences like yours that help me to keep away from the Pop Tarts!
Bless you, woman!

Cleo- You are too funny! You have inspired me since I started this WOE in April. We'll just have to keep inspring each other. We had a blast. I am sore from head to toe, bruises all over, but I would do it again in a heartbeat. This was something way out of character for me. I'm the Girl Scout leader, PTO mom kind of person. I guess now I'm also a whitewater rafter! LOLMichele SW250/CW 226/GW150 F, 38, 5'6"

Re: White Water Rafting in West Virginia
White water rafting is out of character for alllll sorts of people. Even nuns!
I think it's so great that you went and did that! I'll bet not many PTO moms wear a life vest and beat the crap out of rapids with an oar just to try something new! To many people, it's a thrill counting the box tops for education.
"Look Madge! We have 27 box tops! That's a whole $2.70! We can buy those dry erase markers!"
You go!

Re: White Water Rafting in West Virginia
My son was a whitewater raft guide at the Nantahala in NC and on the Ocoee in TN this summer -- he took us down the Nantahala Falls BACKWARDS so we would all be tossed out of the raft into the falls! He says the trip down the Nanty is too long and boring, so he wanted to liven it up for us! Not sure if I'll ever get back in a raft with that boy at the helm again!!!
PS -- they have a great T-shirt there -- it says "Paddle faster -- I hear banjo music!"277/180/160ish -- started 7/28/03 --F

Re: White Water Rafting in West Virginia
I actually saw a t-shirt just like that. I cracked up! We went through many of the rapids backwards. I think we hit them every way that we could. Our guide was trying to get everyone to dump out at same time, but he didn't do it. I sure learned how to hold on quick. I fell out on the first two rapids. My big butt just acted like a trampoline on that raft. We all fell out at least 3 times by the end of the trip. We went on Monday and I'm still sore. I can't imagine having a son that does that every day. He must be a real adventurous kid?Michele SW250/CW 226/GW150 F, 38, 5'6"

Re: White Water Rafting in West Virginia
Yep. He's a whitewater kayaker. He just graduated from high school in May and spent his senior year in a travelling high school for whitewater kayakers. The teachers travel with them so they can study and train where ever they are! Last year he went to Costa Rica, Canada and Australia, as well as up and down the East Coast. Now he's back in the regular world of college and studying in a traditional classroom -- but at least I know where to find him!
The mom part of me tries not to think about the adventure!277/180/160ish -- started 7/28/03 --F

Re: White Water Rafting in West Virginia
I tried kayaking the other week for the first time ever. So glad I didn't try before I lost some weight, as it was, I kept making the guy assure me that I wouldn't make the kayak sink to the bottom of the lake just by trying to get into it. We don't have rapids in Princeton (pity) but I need to give it a shot somewhere. Then again, I couldn't have stuck a 2 year old in the kayak with me if it *had* been the rapids... So many things to try, so little time... LindaJay, if your son wants to uhm... go "kayaking" with me sometime...

Re: White Water Rafting in West Virginia
Lyssie -- if you were going for whitewater, maybe. Flatwater is too "boring" for him. Of course when he was 10 and DH started teaching him to sea kayak, they promised they wouldn't do whitewater! The next year, the kid was begging for something more interesting, so they took up whitewater, and by the time the kid was 12 he was better than DH in whitewater. I've done whitewater kayaking once -- I fail to see the allure of a sport where you wear a helmet so you don't crack your head open while you are underwater trying to escape from a boat before you drown!
Now I have all the regular "kid at college" worries, plus the "I hope he doesn't do something stupid on the water" worries. No wonder I have to take Nexium!!!
Notice how I am pretending to not get the "go kayaking..." innuendo? I am in complete denial that he might possibly "go kayaking" with girls!!!277/180/160ish -- started 7/28/03 --F
