I can still remember being the last guy picked in a number of different sports, especially baseball. I simply could not hit, catch, or throw the ball. Other than that, I was pretty good ball player.
This is one of those things you torture yourself in your dreams, and that you never quite get over. Or at least I didn't. At some point of your being, you are still that 14-16 year old kid who constantly struck out, even though on the scale of importance playing ball ranks so low that it can not be seen.
With that said and keeping in mind, I haven't played ball in many, many years most recently due to fear of knee problems and of course lack of opportunity. Today was the day that changed. We had our IT Outing picnic for the 250 people in my department. One of the activities was softball (not quite fastpitch or baseball, but it was competitive between the two sides of dept.) I still had visions of my 0-for-Too many to count streak the last time I played league ball before the mercifully took me out of the batting lineups in subsequent games. Today I proved my old self wrong.
I played pretty well in the field, managing to catch a couple fast balls sailing towards my head. The highlight of the day was my inside the park homerun with two people on. It gave my team the go ahead runs. You look in the mirror and see the new you. You hear the complements, but it takes something as silly as a company softball game to really convince yourself that you have changed. Inspiration certainly comes in unique and unsuspecting places.
Here's to everyone discovering one more way they are not like their old selves anymore.
