How is it that some people notice such changes that they barely recognize you and others don't notice at all. My husband says the difference is in people's personalities. He thinks that if a person is self centered they will not notice anything about someone else, and if a person is a giving person they notice all the little things. He may be right. My FIL didn't even recognize me in some photos I sent them last week. ( the giving kind of people) My BIL came over last weekend with his family and none of them said a word. (the self centered ones) Not that I was looking for praise, but you would think after losing 50 pounds they would notice. Just wondering what all of you have noticed about this.

Re: People noticing weight loss
See that's the thing. Some people including my BIL/SIL have only seen me once in the last 6 months and fail to notice. Other people see me weekly and they keep commenting how much better I'm looking. It's just strange.I find that people who see me daily don't notice the change as much as people I see a few times a year....Michele SW250/CW 226/GW150 F, 38, 5'6"

Re: People noticing weight loss
I agree with your hubby, mom!
People who are so stuck up that when it rains they drown are only going to see you losing weight as a threat to their shallow existences.
If they acknowledge your success they must, then, cede some of their own superiority.
As if!
Work your bad self, honey. Their lack of words speak volumes to your real success.

Re: People noticing weight loss
I think I'm in the minority here, where I'd prefer people NOT to mention my weight loss, unless I'm really close to them. I get comments from acquantences like "i'm so proud of you, are you feeling better??" and i smile and thank them, but i'm thinking to myself , you have no business being proud of me, and am i feeling better, like they thought i was a miserable slob beforehand or something?? I dunno, maybe it's the person, maybe it's the way they say it, i'm not sure. I don't like being reminded of how visible my weight issue is, I guess.
But I know people who quit smoking who say the same thing, that they hate it when people try to praise them for quitting, so at least I know i'm not the only one who feels that way.
So anyway, i think it might be a matter of not wanting to embarass you. Because almost 50 pounds is most definitely noticeable! Way to go, you are doing awesome btw!!!

Re: People noticing weight loss
This has always puzzled me. I know there are some people who still don't acknowledge that I've lost weight. And the part about them not wanting to embarrass me ~ well, I don't think that is the cause.
I give up waiting for people to comment. The ones who count have commented in a positive way, so I don't care what others think or say. I do agree that the (giving) type of people will always comment and make people happy. I've had people who I don't know very well come up and say things ~ and its brightened my day.Starting Date 3/12/04 285/165/145 - F

Dedication gives wings to our dreams and keeps them in flight! In One Word...COMMITTMENT.

Re: People noticing weight loss
I'm with Cleo. Honestly, everyone who knows you can see when you have lost 50lbs. The ones who comment and congratulate you want to see you succeed and sometimes want to learn what is making you successful. Some are too polite to even mention your weight because they might be afarid to offend you. I think most are deep down envious that you finally are succeeding at getting what you want which will trigger either a negative light on their failures or take the spotlight away altogether.
Contgrats! Keep up the good work!27 F 5' 7"

That is your self-image messing with you! When I eat too much, or didn't do too well for a few days, or haven't exercised, etc.. I seriously feel like I gained back all 50 pounds back on, and that everyone can see that I have been failing... I feel like it is written on my face that Mary hasn't been doing well! Or something, I don't know if that makes any sense. Even though I'm at my half way mark, it doesn't take much for me to start feeling hopeless again. Or those days when I look in the mirror and I think "this is me AFTER losing 50 pounds??" But then on days when I'm feeling great about myself, I look at the same image of myself in the mirror and think "wow i am starting to look good!". Self image is so powerful that it makes your reflection look completely different. On those negative days I just try to ignore myself or think of something positive. It's all about attitude! Try not to let it get you down, you are doing FANTASTIC and you are definitely one of my inspirations!!

Mary, that was an awesome post. I totally agree with you on the self image. Some days I get down and then I have to tell myself "You have lost 50 pounds!" That gets me feeling better in no time.

Re: People noticing weight loss
Very very true! Thank you, Mary! It does matter how I've been doing and everything else. It also helps when DH or someone makes an affirmative remark. Its sad how changeable we are as humans...but thats what makes life interesting too.
