Hey Girl! How are you? Hope you are well, well I can see you are well with your weight loss!!

I have a personal question, just curious to know after how many pounds off were you able to go running, etc.? And how did your exercise routine progress, i mean from what many number of minutes to now? How often did you start working out at first, and for how long did you work out at a time?

Thanks girl for answering if you can! You are definitely an inspiration to many of us!

      Re: Attention: IYAMAMASCHAKE

Oh, boy I haven't been on all day I am sooo happy that you asked.

When I first started Atkins Back In November of 2004 I weighed 285 pounds I didn't actually start working out until after induction. So for the first 14 days I did my usual I walked my daughter to school every day and didn't do much. After the first 12 pounds I was feeling pretty darn awesome so I incorperated weight training into my regime. I would do 45 minutes of weight training alternating upper and lower body workouts. I did this 4 days a week for about 2 weeks then decided to try the Body for Life Challenge. This really got me going on My cardio.

Basically the body for life workout plan you can find out more at www.bodyforlife.com. It is a workout program that has you do upper and lower body weight lifting alternating with cardio 3 days per week so I was working out 6 days per week with sundays off. As more weight began to come off. I was getting quicker and quicker in my walking it was then that I decided to start running. At this point I was 255 pounds. I don't recommend people do what I did I was very heavy when I started but was injury and pain free and also I went very slow.

The first time I went running was the worst thing ever I tell you I had no plans nothing just started walking then jogging WAY too fast I lasted for 7 minutes and thought I would die. Tat was extremely stupid of me to do that so I looked into a running plan that I could handle the first one I came accross was a plan which incorperated running and walking. I started out walking for 3 minutes and running for 2 minutes for a total time of 30 minutes. Now it wasn't a huge amount of time but I was very consistant along with my weight lifteing and began to see my cardio really improving. I incorperated 1 more minute of running every week till I was running for 5 minutes straight with 2 minute walking breaks and was doing reps for 45 minutes. It took a long time to get up to running a huge amount of time I would say it took 4 months for me to run 30 minutes but, since that time I have exploded into the runner I am now. In the beginning I added time I didn't go for milage or anything and only ran 3 days a week that was until 3 months ago when I really got myself dedicated to running and came up with the plan of running a half marathon. I began following a guide I ahve in a bood I bout from Runners World Magazine adding long runs on weekends (Sunday) I consistantly added 1 mile per week and now I am up to running 14 miles straight. I am also training for a full marathon com May 31st of 2006 that will be 2 days before my 30th B day what a great B day presant.

I am excited to be where I am and I am soo happy if I inspire anybody. I belive whatever you do consistancey is key to success. I never gave up I kept giving it my all 200% even when things were not well for me I still gae it 200%. For all of you who know me you know I never give up and I set goals for myself consistantly and that is one thing that keeps me focused more then anything. Also this Board ADBB is like my family and you all keep me strong and support me in everything I do.

This board is a HUGE attribute to my success.

            Re: Attention: IYAMAMASCHAKE

Thanks so much Sarah for answering and giving us your input and experiences with exercising with the extra weight that you had on! The reason I asked was basically my weight is around the same as when you starting jogging (around 255 lbs at this moment) and this past week I was out for a very brisk walk along the paved beach path, and my legs just felt a bit pain the next day, I did it for two nights straight. I have muscular legs, but obviously at the end of the day its those legs carrying around all this weight, and I was worried about getting some kind of injuries. I think I will just stick to my eclyptical machine for now at home, and when I am doing exercise outside, it will be a slower paced walk than what I was doing this past week. I didn't exercise much these past two days because of having my period, but hoping to get back into things tomorrow.

Thanks so much again!! and no problem Mary -chan for starting this thread, afterall the info is for everyone!

              Re: Attention: IYAMAMASCHAKE

If you are doinga lot of walking outside and you do have some leg pain you may want to Purchase new shoes. If you do start to run buy shoes made especially for running thye have the extra padding in the foot where you really need it. And when you are heavier you go through shoes 2X as fast as if you were lighter. Even know your shoes look all right thay may very well be work out. My runners that I bought 2.5 months ago look brand new but, have almost 300 miles on them so I need new ones. The shoe may look great but that doesn't matter if you are investing in your health a new pair of shoes is a small price to pay for being injury free.
