  • Attitude Adjustment

Things at work have gotten ugly. I guess it is the winter weather approaching, darker skies earlier in the day and anxiety of the season...but I've noticed the kids have been acting ugly towards one another. Their little attitudes are in big need of an adjustment.

So, I've made a chart with all their names on it. Inside a jar, I have priviledges that they can earn by using positive words instead of ugly negative words. I challenge them to stop and think before they say anything. Their mission is to say and act in a positive manner as often as they can. At the end of the month, we are going to have a party to celebrate our new attitudes. Every Friday I'm giving them a puppet show to give examples how to say and act nicely towards each other instead of grabbing, shouting and saying ugly words to each other.

Sounds like a great idea! I assume you're an elementary school teacher. I'm going into secondary education. Can you give me some ideas on how to do this for middle school and high school students? My student teaching starts in January and ends around April, so I'm sure some attitude adjustments will be in order!

Sorry - I'm a pre-school teacher/Activity coordinator. Out of all my jobs I've had in my life, this one is the most rewarding. I love my job. I work with kids from ages 1-10. There are only two teachers at our small child developement center and we love those kids as if they were our own. In the mornings when the big kids are at regular school we teach pre-school. Afternoons we have all ages, so we divide them and do activities that are age-appropriate. I work right across the street from my house, so it makes it even better. I consider myself one of the lucky people in this world who gets to laugh, play games, sing songs and have fun all day every day.

Ya know...lately DS has had more of an attitude than usual. Yesterday I allowed him to get me very stressed and upset. TODAY...however, my phrase is "I am Zen." If he won't work or if he gets lippy (He brought home a huge stack of stuff he hasn't finished and school and has to finish it this weekend), he's in the corner and I ignore him while he pouts and does his melodramatic thing.

Becky...even my cats have been wilder than usual. How is your doggie? Perhaps the children and animals know something we don't.....

BTW....excellent job in working with the kids and giving them incentives to behave better!!!

My mom always said that teenagers should be put in the deep freeze until they're 24. In a few years I should be in the market for a freezer..... lol
