  • Need some really sound advice...

Ok, I need some good advice to keep my DH on the plan with me. He went to the back doctor today (bad disks--2 hiernated, 1 bulging) and the doctor told him he is not losing weight fast enough. He lost 12 pounds in a month.

The doctor wants him to lose more faster. OK, so here is the up part. My DH weighs 288 right now and the doctor wants him at 210 ASAP or he wants to do back surgery. The trick is he told Josh he has to limit his caloric intake to 1,200 calories a day. Hello! 1,200 is what the regular old doctor will tell a woman who needs to lose a few...not a man who needs to lose that much. How can I even keep him on Atkins at 1,200. Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated.

He is doing ok with this diet. Any other diet he quits. He loves his carbs, but he really has given them up to succeed. Now he is doubting himself and the WOE because eating 1,200 is seems impossible. I mean, 1,200 is nothing if you eat any beef, sausage, cream cheese or anything.

What should we do? He already does physical therapy three days a week and cannot do more because of his back. I have asked the doctor and he says it is too hard on the back right now to do more and without the therapist it is dangerous.

Please give me some ideas. If I can't feed Josh (I know, he is grown and should do this himself, but I cook the food) and keep him under 1,200 the doctor is going to tell him to do low-fat and high carbs...I just know it.

Please share advice on this one...

I'm not even going to TRY to give advice...I think this one is for an expert like 2Big. However, I can't help but think that the doctor is being unreasonable.

maybe you could get a second opinion from another doctor. 12 pounds in a month is good. or maybe call the doctor back and ask what amount of weight per week/month he feels your DH should loose. I would think if you cut his calories like that his body would think it is being starved and stop loosing weight.

Thanks for the advice. I will see what I can do to cut out some of the yummy quiches I was making for him. There are tons of calories in the mayo and stuff, but he will not go on low-fat! I am the chief cook here and I won't do it. So there, doctor know-it-all. I think a second opinion from another neurosurgeon is in order.

I thought modern medical advice was that we should lose weight more slowly to stay healthy!!!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

If we all knew how to lose 80lbs asap - we'd be doing it - right? Wait a minute.....look where we are.....this is about as fast as it goes. Do anything more drastic and you run the risk of lack of potassium amongst other complications that will shut down organs. If your hubby is able to go through another month or two - he should be in way better condition for any possible surgeries.

Re: Need some really sound advice...

Well, once Josh got home and I asked some pointed questions, it seems the doctor wants him to get to 185. Hello...he weighed more than that when he ENTERED the AIR FORCE. He is too tall for 185 at 6'1.5". Josh said the doctor was really tall and skinny and said he rides his bike over 100 miles a week. Well, good for him. He sounds like a low-cal/low-fat kinda guy to me from what I can gather. We are going for a second opinion.

YEAH 12 lbs in a MONTH IS FABULOUS!
that doctor is a quack, SORRY...

EVEN me with gastric bypass surgury done
now will only loose about 10 to 12 lbs a month..
so that request to loose more on your hubby is

HANG in there and maybe get another opinion
                    of things for him.

If, as it appears from your post, Josh has a bad back and cannot exercise a lot, then 12lbs in a month is terrific. The Dr sounds like a nutter who just likes to do the surgery thing. Tell him to go jump and get a second, and even a third opinion.

Re: Need some really sound advice...

I agree, with everyone her, find another doctor. I've run across surgeons like that who are just scalpel happy. His weight loss is a fast as it can go safely, I've had months where I lost more than twelve but not consistently. I think you'll find that 1200 calories is easily doable. Focus more on vegetables (watch the carbs though) and smaller portions of the meat. Last summer I was sometimes under 1000 calories on some days. Once the natural appetite suppressant of ketosis is in full swing, eating less gets easier.

                          Good luck.
