  • Having Trouble Restarting...HELP!

    HI all,

I had every intention of starting the induction phase on Monday, and I've failed miserably. Had all the food in the house, just didn't do it. I need some inspiring words. My current weight is 317; my goal is 175. My feet hurt constantly, and the only solution is getting the weight off.

I'm really down in the dumps tonight and would welcome any advice from others who have had a hard time getting restarted. I'm usually very goal oriented and results driven, at least at work, but this is a biggie, no pun intended.

Thanks in advance for a pep talk, advice, etc.

    Re: Having Trouble Restarting...HELP!

Here is the only thing that I have been going by lately: JUST DO IT

I re-started on Monday a little more strictly..So far, not bad. I live alone though, so that could help. I did stop at the store and pick up an already done turkey tonight and some veggies. I have been eating roast beef and provolone with some kind of mayo or mustard. Then in an hour or so, I have red adn yellow pepeprs and some dip. Before bed, I have hot flax cereal. I think it is not to bad now cause I am home from about 6 PM on. During the day., I really can't leave the classroom and go pick up something, so if I don't bring it in, I can't have it.

I am kinda busy, so I can find plenty to keep me busy at night when I am sitting here. But believe me, when the teacher in the same room as I am went to get chilli dogs today, they looked really goooood- and I normally would never even get chilli dogs.

Maybe make a journal page and you can see at the end of the week how well you did. I was thinking of that. It is tough, but I jsut keep thinking that I jsut wanna look better when I get my degree next October....I would hate working all this time for a doctorate to be messed up by my thoughts of how stupidlook in all the pictures of the ceremony.

Good luck...e-mail me if you want a buddy. I am on and read every night, but just am so sick of typing sometimes I don't always respond to some ongoing general chats/discussions. I always check and answer e-mail, though.

        Re: Having Trouble Restarting...HELP!

        Hi gail,
You have to want this more than anything(to be healthy and slim again), I suggest you write down all the reasons why you want this. then you can read them over and over again.
At first, to get started you just have to white nuckle it for about a first week. Your body will try its best to get you to go back to eating all those poisonous carbs(well poisonous to us carboholics). You have to deplete your excessive storage of glucose stored in your body(takes about 3 days). then your body will start burning your own fat for energy and you will find the self control you are looking for.
To succeed you have to plan for success. Plan your meals in advance and have them ready before you need them. Drink all your water and start exercising too . Start slowly on the exercise and build up your momentium.
When you feel that you might give up and eat the wrong food, come to ADBB and get support and learn from others that are on the same journey as you.
Read the book, DANDR(2002 edition). It is the Dr Atkins book that we recommend for the greatest success.
Remember, We are all in the same boat and we all want each other to succeed.
Happy Low Carbing! You will never regret eating this way. It has saved my life and given me back my self respect!
Welcome Aboard. NOW get with it! I am rooting for you. You can do it.

          Re: Having Trouble Restarting...HELP!

I was having the same problems as you when I first tried to start - I would always go off around the third or fourth day. It's like a junkie going through withdrawal! I finally realized I just had to stick with it a week and see how I felt.. I didnt think about how much I wanted to lose the first week or at all.. I just concentrated on getting past the FIRST WEEK! I said to myself "anybody can do one thing for just one week.. let's see how I feel afterwards"..

So I went through the sugar withdrawal and got to the other side, and found once the first week was over, I had so much more control of my cravings!!

So my advice to you is to try that - just focus on getting through the first week. Don't worry about weight loss - just get through the withdrawal, Just do everything you can to get past the first few days!! The weight WILL come off,, trust me!!

Short term goals are an absolute must!! I could never have said to myself "okay, I need to lose 120 pounds.. here I go!!" First I said "I want to get under 250!!" and then "I want to fit into those size 22 pants!!" and so on.. One pound at a time, one goal at a time!!

Don't let frustration get the better of you - the more you post at places like this the better you'll feel and do!!

          You can totally do this!!!!!

            Re: Having Trouble Restarting...HELP!

Thank you all. I will spend some time tonight figuring out how to set up a journal here, an exercise log, etc. My daughter, age 24 who lives with me, is also over 300 lbs, and she has been on a tear the last week bringing food into the house that is illegal. I need to have a talk with her tonight - there are some things I cannot resist if they are in front of me. And you're right, even if I can only last 2 minutes on the treadmill, its two minutes more than yesterday. How do I set up an exercise log here? We are also ordering our food for next week tonight on Stop and Shop's Pea Pod service, which will be helpful in planning out the weeks food in more detail.

Funny, a few minutes ago there was talk about bringing a few pizzas in to work to celebrate someone's birthday, and my first reaction was to get out here and check the BB!!!

To Sidrah who offered to be a buddy, how do we do that? I'd like that.

Many thanks, I WILL do this!!!!!!

Just keep telling yourself that what you are feeling is withdrawal symptoms. You will get past this. My feet used to hurt all the time too. Not any more!

Good planning, Gail. Journalling and tracking your food will help keepyou on plan
If you can recruit your daughter as a part of your support team by telling her what foods you cant eat then you will be well on the way to becoming a big loser
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

Everyone has given you such excellent advice, and I only have one thing to add. Sometimes, doing it one week or even one day at a time was too big a goal for me. There were/are definitely moments when it's one minute at a time...fifteen minutes at a time, etc. Take it minute by minute if you need to.

You can do this...and we're here to help you along!!!

Hi, Just send me an e-mail or PM. I'll send you one right now!! t's as simple as that. Is your daughter interested in exercising with you or eating the smae foods as you are?? If so, there's another plus. If not, you stuick with it and do it and maybe it will change her mind a little bit. Nothing more convincing than seeing it happen in front of you every day.

                        Re: Having Trouble Restarting...HELP!

                        Gail,

You have received so much good advice here already. I'll just add one thing that helps me. The success. The WOE provides some pretty quick initial results. Revel in those results. Use the half pound drop as a motivator. When the scale bounces up a bit (and it will) accept that it's just water weight fluctuations and it will be gone in day or two, as long as you stick to plan.

But very simply focus on the achievements and the positives. Even being down a tenth of a pound is a tenth less than yesterday. Two minutes longer today on the treadmill is an improvement as well. When I started running I was dying after a half mile at a jogging pace slower than a slow walk. Now I can run ten miles at a decent pace, it's hard but I can do it.

Small improvements add up faster than you realize. Think about how fast life goes by, if you make small improvements every single day (not necessarily the same type of improvement each day because weight won't drop every day, and you can't always add time every day) in two months those improvements will be astounding. Focus on one improvement every day, if your weight is down in the morning great, there's one. If not, focus on a couple more minutes of exercise (or do that even if the weight does go down, then it's a double improvement).

But basically focus on the positives, revel in them, enjoy them, brag about them here. We will cheer you on, and pick you up when you are discouraged. But it can be done, look around, lots of people here are living proof.

                        Best of luck,
                        Jim

Thank you all for the ongoing support! This BB is already a critical support element. My daughter has decided to do weight watchers supplemented by Meridia, which I'm not crazy about, but at 24 I can't tell her what to do. I'm just glad she is starting something!!! We ordered our groceries via PeaPod last night, so the food will be delivered Sat AM - my feet hurt way too much to walk through the store for 45 minutes buying everything, as good as that exercise would be, I'd be crippled for at least a day with foot and ankle pain!! No excuse for not having the right food around. My plan is to get a week's worth of food prepped, including snacks, so there is no work to be done when I want a snack. I'm just looking at the coming week. I'm hosting Thanksgiving, so I'm in charge of the food, and its a small gathering at my house. And even if I only last 2 minutes on the treadmill, I will get on it every day. I will set up my goal gizmo here - they look so cool! I hope to break 300 by 12/31, then I'll need to decide on my next goal. Thank you all soooo MUCH! I am feeling energized today and more confident that this is my time.
