  • The Aussie Century Club

    Hi there,

I've almost lost 100 pounds. Apparently 100 pounds is 45.45 kilos.

Couldn't we call this place the 45.45 kilo club ??

I'll let you guys in on a little secret - it sometimes bugs us non-Americans when all the posts are about pounds, thanksgiving, walmart (never been), and American-centric lingo.

I'm not Anti-American (don't get me wrong), but sometimes it makes you feel left out

From posting on the internet, I've become quite amazed at how different we really are (english speaking people from other countries).
You watch movies and stuff and think we are all the same - but the cultural differences are great!

Like us Aussies, we can sometimes joke a lot, and that get's us in trouble. Sometimes other cultures don't have the same sense of humour!

I suppose a lot of Americans have misconceptions about Australia ? I've seen TV shows like the Simpsons and Lost where they portray Australia in wierd ways - it always makes us laugh.

I guess it doesn't matter where we come from, we are all trying to get good health by following the works of a Great New Yorkian - Dr Atkins!

Thanks for listening to me rant!

      Hi LC Dave,

Wow you have really lost alot of Kg's! Good on ya mate! LOL

Canada is also metric but I still prefer pounds to kilo's. Don't let the large number of Yanks get to you. We have CC'ers from all over the world here.

        Thanks guys,

        Michelle,
Although I've never been outside of Australia (I haven't even been to Tasmania!) I hear Canada would be a great place to live! A lot of Aussie's say it's similar to Australia with the no guns and stuff!

My girlfriend really wants to go to The US for a holiday.

                Hi Dave,

Don't let any walmart talk make you feel left out... .

And actually, I don't have any preconceived notions about Australia (especially from TV), other than you are grilling a kangeroo on your grill!

century club for everybody needed to lose 100+ pounds when they start out just sounds so much nicer then the 45.5 kilo club aand the century kilo club would be just too exclusive for most ADBBers.

                          Re: The Aussie Century Club

Yes, Dave I definitely concur. It was interesting that when I posted a link to the Aussie slang directory (http://www.koalanet.com.au/australian-slang.html), 3 or 4 yanks (and this is a term of endearment here, yanks, if we were being nasty you'd know it!) said that now they understood Waltzing Maltilda! I guess we all forget our cultural differences for the things we have in common, and that's a good thing.

The 45.5 kg club just doesn't have the same ring to it, does it? And if it was 100kg that means I'd only weigh 31 kg! A bit too extreme a weight loss, methinks.

I've never been outside Australia either (but I have visited TAsmania, my mother and sister live there now) I've always wanted to visit Canada, I want to do the mountain trains. Warwick and I are real railway fanatics. He visisted Canada with his Us relatives in 1990 (before we met) and has great videos and poics from various spots including Lake Louise - lots of snow.

And no, we don't have pet kangaroos (they are a bit too stroppy and argumentative for that, a kick can disembowel a person) and we don't eat the meat much because, although they are a pest, they are impossible to 'farm', so it is gourmet meat at gourmet prices.

An fellow names Nino Culotta wrote a book which was made into a movie called "They're a Weird Mob' - if you want an accurate picture of Aussie life (at teh time it was made) it's good to watch (http://www.screensound.gov.au/Screen...?OpenDocument). Another great Aussie film, but hard to get, even here, is one called 'Crackers' (http://www20.sbs.com.au/movieshow/in...review&id=122), about a disfunctional Aussie family at Christmas. You'll laugh a lot and shed a terar or two as well. Warwick and I try to hire it for Chrtistmas every year.

We may all be a weird mob, but we're OK, really!
