  • Pilates Anyone?

I got a Total Gym for Christmas and I LOVE IT!! I am doing strength training MWF and wanted to do something less strenous but active on T/Th. My total gym comes with all the Pilates equipment and video workout. I guess I thought Pilates was more "aerobic" and after watching the video realize its more stretching and toning.

Ok, so my question...has anyone partipated in Pilates exercises and if so, did you notice any benefits to weight loss or is it more about total health and relaxation?

Thanks...you guys are always a wealth of knowledge!!

    Re: Pilates Anyone?

Well I haven't really tried pilates yet... but i do do yoga... yoga and pilates are both core exercises that deal with your abdominal muscle strength. I do yoga every night along with crunches and leg lifts. I notice that my jeans after a week of doing it fit much nicer and I do lose the weight in decent intervals. If you have a big tummy like i do... pilates are great for toning it! I have already started losing a bit of my belly... yesterday my dad and my boss even noticed it!

There are many different types of Pilates...There are the aerobic looking kinds....and the more stretchy ones.
I have one of each. The stretchy one really tones my abs....I feel the pain the next day....so believe me, it works...Pilates talks about your "power house" something about keeping your abs tight at all times to stay in balance....and that part really works. I like it better than aerobics....

I did the stretchy stuff and the core muscle developing stuff.

it is a great workout if you don't think you get any cardio holding all those fricking positisns for all that time you will see. Yhere was an all pro NFL wide reciver who did them for strenght and felxablity.

          Re: Pilates Anyone?

I am going to buy a PIlates video at the weekend (saw it advertised). I have a little booklet that came with a packet of Kellog's cereal a couple of years ago, but I'm not sure if I'm doing it right. When I signed up at the gym they had a Piulates class on a SAturday but before I could go to it they took it off because 'nobody wanted to do it'. They replaced it with what they call 'yogalates' but because of ankle and knee problems I cannot manage any of the work where you stretch up from the floor prone positions. My knees hurt for 3 days!

Ok, I'm excited! All great feedback...thank you! This one is definitely more the stretching and toning but still sounds like an excellent workout from your experiences. I will try it and let you know!
