Re: had to undergo a gastric bypass to reduce his body fat

Patty, my heart bleeds for your friend. To be so obese and unhappy - he must be terrified inside and is subconsciously refusing to face reality. And to have children! But you can not make anyone do it, they have to want it.

I should have done this 8 years or so ago, even after I saw the awful photo in my siggie it still took me 15 months to get off my fat arse and do something. He'll be in my thoughts and I hope he can decide to do something for himslef very soon.

My heart goes out to any large person that is struggle - haven't we all been there!

Re: had to undergo a gastric bypass to reduce his body fat

Well I know I haven't posted in a bit, but I think this is something that could use a little of my input as well so here goes.

Patty, I can understand the fear you have for your friend. If you will look at my stats near the bottom you can see that unlike LC_Dave who was close to that state of health, I was right smack in the middle of it. The edema in both my legs was very severe, so much so in fact that my feet would shine like they had been soaked in oil they were so swollen. I couldn't move, shower, or even use the restroom without chest pain, and when I slept for many hours out of the day just because the act of being conscious exhausted me.
Today, I am nothing like that person I used to be. As the pounds have fallen away, I have found the person I remembered myself to be. I have found the person who I liked. I found the person I remember from so long ago who was too stubborn/determined/etc. to lay down and eat himself to death. I have adopted an exercise program that most 300 pounders would consider overwhelming (45 minutes of walking 5 days per week) and I feel great doing it.
I will say my prayers tonight with your friend in mind. I, too, thought about gastric bypass but Atkins was my final test before seeking surgical intervention. Now, almost 10 months later, I have lost 135 pounds (I need to update my signature a little lol) with seemingly very little effort. I sincerely hope the same will happen for your friend.

Re: had to undergo a gastric bypass to reduce his body fat

Dave, thank you for the kind words. Yes, this is my new life. Do you know the word diet means just that, a way of life?

Bran, I'm absolutely awed by your courage and dedication. To do 45 minutes walking a day when you were so overweight and ill was amazing. Good on you for trying, and 135 lbs in 10 months is fantastic.

I read somewhere that obesity is death by overeating, and although I was nowehere near your weight, I felt very despairing and was sure that was my fate, to. Now, my attitude could not be more different. Healthy is just so much better!

              That's Awesome!!!

You have lost a chunk of weight!

Golly, I dunno if I could do that much exercise now (Hmm maybe I should get off by bum!)

I too had the Edema thing, but not as bad as you discribed. But my feet and legs would swell up bad It was terrible!

I still have some residual in my legs, but I'm hoping that will go as the weight goes down!

I hope you can post some more!

                Bran,

You just made my day. Reading your post brought tears into my eyes! I am so proud of you. I don't have the words to say how much strength and character you must have.

                You inspire me.
No stats. Not weighing anymore ever. Will post "before and after" pictures when I want to. The end.

I agree.... and actually I feel that way about everyone here. Each one of you has been an inspiration. When I get lazy and don't want to work out, reading your posts get me motivated. When I feel down because my weight isn't flying off the way I want it to, the posts about your own successes or breakthroughs cheers me up and helps me keep going. Your posts when you're depressed, struggling or frustrated also help, because so often you're holding up a mirror to my own progress and I feel that connection and am grateful we have each other.

I had considered gastric bypass too when I was over 280, but decided to give Atkins one more shot. I knew I'd be one of those people that would have the surgery but not change their eating habits and gain it all back. Atkins would teach me how to change my life, just not watch what I eat.

To be honest this is my fear too!

That's porbably why I am against the surgery for me. I don't trust myself!!

I hear you. That was brought home again recently to me.

I know a person who had bypass surgery a while back. I had heard they were doing well, lost about 70-80 pounds (at that count). I was pleased for them because I know how miserable this is.

I ran into them. I had stopped by the place they worked to pick things up. I went by their office and waved hello. They were munching out of a big bag of fritos while they worked. I didn't say anything out loud, but inside I was screaming at them, and then feeling ashamed that I reacted so strongly because I have no right to judge.

Maybe that bag of fritos had lasted them a month, maybe it was a one time deal.. but deep inside my fear was they had surgery but didn't learn to change their eating habits. I was very afraid for them as well as frustrated at the system that seems to conspre to keep us in ignorance and pain. But I keep them in my thoughts, because if I can learn to eat better any one can

I guess I don't understand how that guy can say he was strict about his diet but he still kept weighing that? In my calculations, you need to consume less calories than you burn in order to lose weight... I guess I can't figure out how eating less would have him staying the same weight?

Well being as large and immobile as he is, his metabolism is probably shot to heck. Obviously, there are some major problems there somewhere.

That is so hard these days isn't it?!

I struggled for so long with my weight and I can totally emphasise with peopel in same position,

but because I am having a little success with Atkins, I sudden;y want to be the carb **** and run out and tell all the chunky people that I have found the 'best thing' ever!

But from their point of view I'm just another 'nutty dieter'.
And I hated when peopel judges me for what I hate in the past!

You are right, nobody had the authority to 'judge' what others are eating!!!

I guess the best way to help is:
                            • Mind your own Business - Lose weight and get the health benefits
                            • Be supportive of people in their struggles
                            • Be their to help them with ATkins, should they 'really want' to know!
