  • I'm beginning to think 100 lb loss is possible.

For more than 10 years I've been unable to lose weight because of undiagnosed hypothyroid. I've tried all sorts of diets. I was a TOPS member. The most recent was Weight Watchers. I stuck to it like glue and in three full months I lost 10 pounds and I knew for sure it was a medical problem. I had gained so much I was at 340 lbs. I went in for a full exam. I explained to my doctor what was going on. I asked him if the Atkins diet might work for me. He nodded sweetly and said it might, but he recommended a gastric bypass. Then it occured to him that I might be hypothyroid. He ran a full blood pannel and called me the next day. He told me to get on the Atkins diet right away and get by my pharmacy and pick up a thyroid Rx he was calling in. My triglicerides were at 350.

That was six months ago. My doctor gets all happy whenever I go in to see him. My triglicerides were down to 200 after the first six weeks. I'm about due to go in for a recheck and I'm sure they are much better now. As of this morning, I've lost 62 pounds. I've had a lot of goals since I started. The first was not to have a heart attack or stoke and die. Then it went to 5 pounds more weight loss. Then I thought if I can just lose to below 300 I will be happy. I've lost all the weight I gained in the last 10 years since we moved. I can wear the clothes from the very back of my closet and a lot of my clothes are way too big now. Now I'm finally at the mind set that I can make it all the way down to 240 and lose a whole 100 pounds.

Re: I'm beginning to think 100 lb loss is possible.

That's awesome! Congrats on the loss so far, keep it up!

I am also hypothyroid (you are getting this diagnosed and treated yes????) and Atkins has been the only diet that has ever worked for me. I only lost 30 lbs on WW then stalled for 12 weeks and got tired of being hungry all the time and stopped and regained all the weight back and more. I stall alot on Atkins but I still am losing inches and weight here and there and at least its free and no surgery involved!

All my numbers have improved dramatically as well. My cholesterol has gone down 40 points! (182->144) As my doctor said, I don't care what you're doing to lose weight, just keep doing it.
        Start date: 2/22/04 347/222/135 ~ 5'2"
        STAC Restart: 1/05/09
        306/229/135 ~ 5'2" 77 lbs down!

        Goal #1: 247 - 2nd 10% (59lbs, 247, also 100 lbs total loss) - Met 1/4/10!!!
        Goal #2: 241 - Halfway to goal! (106 lbs lost) - Met 2/21/10!!!

        Goal #3: 222 - 3rd 10% - Lowest Atkins weight
        Goal #4: 210 - Still on track!
        Goal #5: 200/199 - 4th 10% - One-derland! End year goal!
Female/Hypothyroidism/Arthritis/Fibromyalgia - If I can lose weight on this, so can you!

A terrific story. I'm sure you can lose the 100 lbs easily (as you now know what was causing the gain) and keep going down the scale from there if you want.
