Has anyone here ever been to OA or are you currently attending. I have been thinking about going but I am hesitant because I don't know much about it. I know that they support all healthy ways of eating and I was thinking that having someplace to go to talk about my bad habits and learn some new tips would be great. I think they might do weigh-ins there as well which will keep me more accountable.
Please let me know if you know anything about this.

    Thanks, Jill

    Hey!

I went about 8 years or so ago to a few meetings in 2 different places. It is structured exactly like AA (or so I gather). There are no weigh ins or recipe things. Everyone follows their own diet plan. It's more or less giving yourself up to a higher power and supporting each other. You also need to go several times before you get a sponser, etc....

I was to two different groups in 2 different locations and each was the same but the people made it totally different. So.... it could be a good thing if you found one where you connected with the people. I stopped going because all the people were older and I really couldn't "connect" with anyone as I had hoped. I hope this helps!

      Re: Oa

I remember being MUCH younger than the others in the group and therefore didn't connect with anyone. At the time (many years ago) there was a recommended diet (no sugar, low carb) and mostly just went around the room and gave those who wanted an opportunity to talk. It was a nice enough bunch of people but not relevant to me at the time.

I went to a few meetings several years back. They use the Big Book of AA and the exact same 12 steps. Just as they read the book they substitute alcohol for food and alcoholic for compulsive overeater or something like that. I just never could see how it really anyone? And there were very few people in there at goal weight. I wish they had a group for Atkins rather that OA. Now that I'd go to. haha

I was forced to go to one when I was 14 years old ( and 15 pounds overweight...yah, that number is right) I'm sure the people were probably wonderful but my experience of constantly having a mother tell me that I'm screwed up and forcing me to go to things just cuz she felt bad about herself, well....

Hey Jill I have not been but I don't believe they do weigh-ins. I think they leave that up to the individuals and it's more talking about the power food has over you. Let us know if you do go what it's like. I have heard that TOPS (taking off pounds sensibly) does the weekly weigh-ins for many of their meetings or meeting places. Don't know if that's any help.

                  Re: Oa

I attended a couple of OA weekly meetings for several years in the 80's. OA isn't about food or a diet. It operates by the 12 Step principles and is a support group for people who have eating disorders including overeating, binge eating, bulemia, anorexia. The point of the group is to share experience, strength and hope that we can recover from our disease.

As with 12 Step Programs, the premise is that we can not recover alone. Alcohols abuse like food abuse is a disease of isolation. There is a spiritual aspect of the program, not in a religious sort of way unless that is your choice, but depending on a power greater than ourselves.

Personally, I got a lot from OA. Interestingly enough, there were lots of anorexics and bulemics who looked slim on the outside and for the first few meetings I felt very out of place. But within a short time, I learned that we were probably more alike than different due to the REASONS we overate, purged, starved, etc.. It was all about people, places and things and developing a healthy approach to food.

If you decide to attend a meeting, commit to a few before you decide whether this is the right approach for you.

                  Bless you.
