  • My father.....

    My father passed away on Saturday night. He died of a massive heart attack, brought on by both high obesity and alcohol. He was 56.

    I look just like my father at my weight, only I'm sure it's probably harder on me as a girl. I don't drink alcohol but I drank a 24 pack of soda on a daily basis. I normally drank Diet Mountain Dew, though I switched to Pepsi One when I started Atkins 2 weeks ago. I haven't touched Soda since I found out he died. We all have our addictions, his and mine were food and drink. I can't stop Atkins for time to grieve in a bowl of potatoes, not now.

    I wasn't close with my father, this is much harder on my half brother/half sister than it is on me, but I was always very mad at him for not getting his sh** together and have a relationship with us even though we tried to with him. Now, it's time for me to get my sh** together. I don't have kids yet,but when I do, I'm not going to sit out on the sidelines eating potatoes and drinking diet soda. time to gett'ir done, huh?

        Sorry for your loss!

        It looks like you're doing an amazing job not letting emotional eating get to you. Take care.

            I'm so glad you're not letting your father's life or death control who you are and where you're going! You seem very determined to live a full and healthy life. So sorry for your loss.

              Jeepgirl,

              I'm sorry to hear about this.

              In relation to your father, it is not always easy to get our **** together. In fact it is very very difficult.

              I don't have kids, because I feel I haven't got my stuff together with the weight.

              I see a lot of succesful people on weight loss, come back a year or two later having put weight back on. Why ? Because it's hard. It's hard to be vigilant your whole life, especially when life smacks you up sid ethe head.

              It's hard, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try. I think everyone has to understand that the biggest enemy is the one within.

              I applaud you Jeepgirl with your attitude not to binge because of sorrow.

              If you can stay strong through this, you will have the stuff to keep going your whole life.

                  You are an amazing and strong woman. You can do this! I too am sorry for your loss. And sorry too that for SO many of us, it takes something dramatic to turn us to "getting our s*** together". You are on the right track and I can't wait to see you succeed!

                          Really sorry to hear about your father. {{{{ hugs }}}}

                          Knowing the health history of your parents and grandparents can be a real motivator. It is for me. There has been cardiovascular disease on both sides of my family as well as diabetes. I saw my health going down the same ways, if not worse, due to the wrong diets, wrong way of eating, etc. Talk about motivation!

                              I'm sorry to hear about your dad.

                              My father also died at a very young age from heart disease, and I'm sure obesity and years of drug and alcohol abuse had something to do with his health, or lcak of it. Even though he'd been clean for 20+ years by the time he died, it was hard for me not to be angry with him for not taking better care of himself. This also has been motivation for me to start eating better and exercise.
