  • Whispers, behind closed doors.

So... I work on a post surgical cardiac wing. Everyday I give the same speech about diet and lifestyle changes. We discuss caloric intake, fats, etc. I am supposed to encourage a low calorie, low fat lifestyle! It is the hardest thing I have ever had to do. I can't tell you how many times I have sneaked in a conversation about Atkins and get this alarmed look on a pt's face or their family member... But every once in a while, I get interest! And that's when I softly close the room door and tell them my secret! My secret pathway to life for the living, my story, my success ... And ever so often, I get validation.

Not long ago we had a heart transplant pt that stayed with us for months. We got to know each other very well. She had a companion who was severely overweight and they had been dieting together for years. Every day was the same. They went over the dietary menu's picking out 'Good' choices for their daily meals. And then they would chat about what little they had lost and how frustrated they both were trying to have some success. I casually mentioned that I had 'Been there, done that' and had finally managed to lose 130 lb's !

The response was amazing. I quietly closed the door and told them all about Atkins and my WOL. They got so excited. Asked a million questions, and then of course the pt ended our conversation with "I'm going to ask my doctor what he thinks"
Can't say that I blame her because she was terrified to do anything to jeopardize her new heart. But I knew what was going to happen, and I was right.. I got chewed out big time!!! Talk about reading me the riot act! They called it "An incident" And I can't have anymore "incidents" or I lose my job.

But something wonderful happened. Her friend started Atkins the very next day! And she has lost a total of 42 pounds as we speak. I see her often and she is so dang happy. I have given her tons of recipes and the addy to this board. I'm hoping they will join the board when they go home.
Although our pt is still low fat, low calorie, she couldn't be more excited for her companion. Her friend sees her doctor next month for a blood panel. I am willing to bet that her cholesterol is down!!

Just wanted to share. It's so frustrating for me. I never know when to speak up, and when to pipe down! But if I only close one door, and whisper one time a year, that's one triumph, that I will never forget!

    Hugs, Tammy

I nagged and nagged my mom about doing Atkins and all she did was write me off telling me it was not safe. Imagine her surprise when her cardiologist suggested it to her.

That's great!! If I found even one cardiologist on our floor that condoned Atkins, I would spout it from the rooftops! We have protocols we have to follow, so I'm tongue tied!!
But there are many Doctors that suggest Atkins. My family Doctor is the one who suggested it to me... So maybe there's hope for them yet....

      Thanks, Tammy

the head of cardiology here does Atkins and recomends it to his overweight heart patients even goes so far as to tell them if they don't want Atkins pick another low carb plan.

Since you got a reprimand ask them to examine the Atkins plan and tell you exactly whatis unhealthy about eating unrefined foods and eleminating sugary processed foods from our diet. I bet whoever did your incident report never even read the actual plan and believes it is like those TV pics whenever they do a story on atkins bacon in an inch oif greease eggs ion grease and a huge greasey steak of cheeseburger. you never see any of the veggie servings we have. But you know from work that the 3 cups we actually have the first 2 weeks is actually 5-4 servings of veggies per the USDA and more then they recommend.

Thanks 2big... I did actually try to convince our manager. But her exact words were "We have to follow protocol, period!" She said she knew I had had success with my "Diet" but that I had no right trying to convince a pt to change something so detrimental to her progress. UGH!! She's never weighed more than 90 pounds, soaking wet!! And she is so, by the book. I couldn't get her to see that Atkin's isn't grease!!! She just waved me off like I wasn't even speaking. Ever had someone continue looking at papers while they are chewing you out?? She looked at me once throughout the entire conversation... That's when she reiterated "No more incident reports or I won't be able to keep you here, is that understood"? Made me feel quite insignificant!!

I will continue to do all I can ... I know somewhere in that hospital, there's a Dr. that will back me up. I just gotta find him...

why don't you just approach one of the heart docs or diabetic docs and politely flat out ask them about low carb diets with 6 servings of veggies from day one and gradient increases in healthy lower glycemic carbohydrates all the way to maintnenance where one could be eatting 6-8 cups of them a day. diet watch the look on there face when they say how healthy it is and then you say good cause I've been getting a lot of flack about my Atkins. have a copy of your induction food lists handy and even a spare copy of DANDR for them to examine the phases in.

I'm sorry you had to have an 'incident' report for speaking the truth. I think that you are a walking example of what works and what doesn't. Every day that you practice your WOE and impress them with your energy, beauty and life-style....

Someday when the people you are preaching low-fat to don't lose...they will ask you how come you are losing and you can tell them that your doctor has recommended you do LOW CARB.

I'm so proud of you!! Your job and weight loss and life-style keep me inspired!!

oh and you might want to have our OWL stickie handy too so they don't get hung up on the lack of other veggies and complex carbs in the polan. Once they are educated their patients will be doing better.

                      Re: Whispers, behind closed doors.

I think this is so funny. Not in the "haha" kinda way, but in the ironic way. Before I, or my father, started Atkins, my step-mother was working at a pharmaceutical company, so decided to check it out with the doctors, since we get different ones from different areas and everything. ALL of them agreed that it was a good plan. Of course this was back in the day before everyone decided that all Atkins is is eating a stick of butter for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. So I work in Big Pharma now, and there's a doctor here who decided to go on the "one meal a day" diet. True, he lost a lot of weight, but I look at him and the only thing I can think is "It's good he's old 'cause if I were screwing with my metabolism that much at this age, I would be so f'd up when I get older". ANYWAY. The point of my little rant is that it's been approved by doctors, I know a ton of them who have said it's a good eating plan, and I've known a ton of oncologists who are actually DOING it (or at least they were when I knew them). It's nuts for healthcare to turn around and be like, oh, we have to say that low fat high carb is working cause that's what we've always said - GOD FORBID something else may work better for different folks.

I'm getting off my soapbox now.

                        Re: Whispers, behind closed doors.

                        Hi Lyssie,

I agree. It's my point exactly. But it is the sad truth that what they tell folks in the Dr's office, isn't what they tell them on the hospital floor. In fact, someone from dietary visits them with discharge orders to insure they will continue their low fat plan, at home. Post surgical patients recieve a Cardiac notebook preaching the praises of low fat, calorie counted diets. They attend nutrition classes before they leave the hospital that teaches them low fat cooking, and how to monitor the calories day by day. The only low carb, or carb monitored diets, passed out on the floor, are to diabetic patients from the Diabetic counselor or nurse. And if anyone tries to persuade them differently, ....well, I already told you what happened to me.

It's like they have been brainwashed. It's ok to tell a patient with high blood pressure, and serious heart issues, to get on a low carb plan, before it's too late. But once the damage is done, meaning they have had bypass surgery or heart transplant, they revert back to the pyramid!! So how confident are they really??? I think they know the plan works! I think they are "OK" with recommending it as a weight loss plan. But they are not convinced it is a healthy life plan. Know what I mean?? Even though time after time they have the proof in the numbers. Cholesterol comes down etc...

It is sad really. Because I promise you, so many would benefit if the Dr's would just be a little flexible and allow post surgical pt's the option the choose... After all, it's their heart.

                        Thanks, Tammy

Oh doctors! UGH!!! Why for once can't they use their brains instead of their medical journals?! Think outside the box, people! I wasn't told Atkins was unhealthy by mine, just that its "hard to stick to long term". And he never once congratulated me on my loss. He just ignored it...the one person you would think would say something nice about the improved health. Tammy, I'm sorry you had to suffer for trying to help someone, but you're tenacity is awesome! You are a success story, and to risk losing your job to save someone's life with good advice...I think that makes you a hero too!

I had a client the other day tell me that he tried Atkins but had to quit because he missed being able to eat vegetables. Then he went on to say that he just doesn't see how it can be healthy to gorge himself on bacon and steaks all day long.

Sigh. If only people would actually READ THE BOOK before making snap judgements!
