So... I work on a post surgical cardiac wing. Everyday I give the same speech about diet and lifestyle changes. We discuss caloric intake, fats, etc. I am supposed to encourage a low calorie, low fat lifestyle! It is the hardest thing I have ever had to do. I can't tell you how many times I have sneaked in a conversation about Atkins and get this alarmed look on a pt's face or their family member... But every once in a while, I get interest! And that's when I softly close the room door and tell them my secret! My secret pathway to life for the living, my story, my success ... And ever so often, I get validation.
Not long ago we had a heart transplant pt that stayed with us for months. We got to know each other very well. She had a companion who was severely overweight and they had been dieting together for years. Every day was the same. They went over the dietary menu's picking out 'Good' choices for their daily meals. And then they would chat about what little they had lost and how frustrated they both were trying to have some success. I casually mentioned that I had 'Been there, done that' and had finally managed to lose 130 lb's !
The response was amazing. I quietly closed the door and told them all about Atkins and my WOL. They got so excited. Asked a million questions, and then of course the pt ended our conversation with "I'm going to ask my doctor what he thinks"
Can't say that I blame her because she was terrified to do anything to jeopardize her new heart. But I knew what was going to happen, and I was right.. I got chewed out big time!!! Talk about reading me the riot act! They called it "An incident" And I can't have anymore "incidents" or I lose my job.
But something wonderful happened. Her friend started Atkins the very next day! And she has lost a total of 42 pounds as we speak. I see her often and she is so dang happy. I have given her tons of recipes and the addy to this board. I'm hoping they will join the board when they go home.
Although our pt is still low fat, low calorie, she couldn't be more excited for her companion. Her friend sees her doctor next month for a blood panel. I am willing to bet that her cholesterol is down!!
Just wanted to share. It's so frustrating for me. I never know when to speak up, and when to pipe down! But if I only close one door, and whisper one time a year, that's one triumph, that I will never forget!
Hugs, Tammy
