  • Dangerous Or Clever Idea? QUESTION HERE!

I was reading Chapter 19 in the DANDR "Eating In The Real World" and learned this:

Dietary fiber grams are subtracted from total carbohydrate grams to make net carb grams - which are the ones that count when doing Atkins.

So - - - with that understood - This is the lightbulb that went off in my head:

Why can't I just take extra fiber when I eat something high in carbs? (To cancel out some of the Carbohydrate grams!!! Ta-da!

Too much fiber isn't good for you, and I'm pretty sure it doesn't work that way. Eating flax after a marshmallow isn't going to make the marshmallow not count.

Check out our Low Carb Recipes website and add to it!!

Re: Dangerous Or Clever Idea? QUESTION HERE!

Many others have had that off lightbulb moment.

basic math tells us this is wrong.

high carb food you want had say 46 grams of carbohydrates total and 2 grams of fiber. for 44 net carbs

light bulb moment said to add fiber say flaxseedmeal ( this is one of the lowest net carb fibers out there) package says 4 total carbs and 4 grams of fiber so lets do the math (assuming no rounding in those package numbers for the sakeof this equation only.)

46 total minus 2 grams of fiber plus 4 total minus 4 grams of fiber and we got still 44 net carbs.

there is nothing we can add to eatten foods to undo the carb count.

Oh heck so much for that idea and guess what:

My Fiber Pills (Equate Fiber Therapy from Walmart) have 3g of carbohydrates with 3grams of diatary fiber in 6 pills so there goes that theory... Sigh!

LOL you could substitute cardboard (cellulose is fiber) for the flour, and have fewer net carbs per cake as a result. Bet you wouldn't eat as much, either!

This is close to the science in producing those processed low carb foods out there. Add super-cheap dietary fiber up to 5g per serving, as a substitute for the equivalent non-fiber constituent to produce a food of the same volume and comparable consistency and taste. Then multiply the price tag by up to 10.

Re: Dangerous Or Clever Idea? QUESTION HERE!

A lot of labels list the total carb in the food and then the fiber grams under it. They will indent the fiber, and sometimes even break that down. The fiber pill likey has total carbs 3g, of that 3g being fiber, so net would be 0g. On the other hand, a product like Metamucil also has non-fiber carbs (aka sugar) so you'd subtract fiber total g's from Carb total g's to get net carbs you count.

The only way that theory would work is if you can find something high in fiber and low in carbs so that you would end up with a negative net carb count. Not sure if any foods like that exist though.

As 2Big has said, that's not right. Fibre is a carbohydrate. Every bit you had just increases the total carbs.

                        My solution:-

when I eat something high in carbs?
Stay away from this high carb situation!

If that something is high in fiber carbs, and you add extra fiber, you can count on a laxative effect. The only difference between the carbs we count and the ones we don't is the fact that we cannot digest certain carb types. These ones we call fiber are the same ones that turn into fat when eaten by cattle.
