  • Is slow steady weight loss - the best way?

I believe that slow steady weight loss is the best.

Other people online disagree with me.

The quick fix, the popularity of a fad, seems to reign supreme in this world.

The quick fix doesn't need patience & persistence, and it has no tolerance for the real world, and changes of life.

If you are only in it for the quick fix, I reckon when life 'slaps you up side the head', you can fall to pieces.

What insights do you guys and gals have?

Statistics say that slow and steady is the way to go. It's more sustainable, more maintainable.

You're right. Everyone wants what they want and they want it NOW. Who doesn't? I'm of the opinion that the 'instant gratification' mindset is what landed a whole slew of us in the chubby boat to begin with. Getting healither is a prime opportunity to retrain ourselves in soooo many different ways.

Those that are in this for the quick-fix generally get at least a portion of what they're looking for. Me? I've never been one to settle for half of anything. I want it ALL, but that doesn't mean I have to have it NOW.

Sure the statistics support what we know in real life, but it is real life that trips us up every time. Real life is lurking out there around corners, at holidays, on vacation, at happy occasions, during sad or trying times, in sickness or in health, best intentions or not. For several years, I've loved to read the Induction forums with people who have to lose 20 pounds by next week for a special occasion and they ask if they can do it. Sadly there are no quick fixes. So, to be successful, it's important to learn life lessons about how to sustain continued weight loss, how to reformat how we live, how we eat, how we move, how we say no, how we prepare, how we recognize triggers.

I've struggled with illness/injury over the last year and I've had to celebrate the minor victories. But the minor victories are what will help me achieve my goals. I want this to be the last time I have to "lose" weight and I'm committed to sustaining my efforts as a lifestyle for however long I'm planting those feet on the floor in the morning.

      Good topic, Dave.

Brook, thanks for your comments! Someone supports my thinking!

        I see it as this:-

My dedicating to doing to no matter what you are saying: Even if I stall, am challenged by life or circumstance, I will keep plodding along and I will achieve that goal.

If something serious happens in our life - like the death of a loved one, or losing your job etc, the slow turle loser, will simply keep plodding along!

        GO THE TURTLES!

I think that when you lose slow you learn along the way how to keep it off. Atkins offers us the best of both worlds were in at first you can lose rather rapidly and it gives your ego and self esteem that much needed boost. It says, I can do this. My lesson has been if it came off quick it will go back on even quicker and it brings friends.

Cool! I was just about to say that if it came off quick it goes back on quick! I like the "brings friends" part! SO TRUE! Slow and steady wins the race-- just look at the turtle in the fable! That hare ran loops around him, and in the end the turtle won! If we're in this forum, chances are we're here for the long haul, and it doesn't matter so much when we get there...just that we DO get there! Right?

the quick vs slow has some maybes like morbid obese folk need the initial weight off quick for medical reasons once they become just obses or overweight then slow to goal would be ideal but when the weight is a medical issue it needs to be gone quickly.

Dr Atkins gives all Atkineers the best of both worlds. Fast rapid induction loss and then a slow 6 month period for the last 10 pounds so we can practice all the things we have learned and make then routine so when we move in our goalie house we are prepared.

Re: Is slow steady weight loss - the best way?

I think it depends on the how and the means.... I lost mostly at a rate between 3.0 to 4.5 pounds per week, which is fast by most standards. What is too fast and what is right depends on the person. I ate according to the plan and certainly was not in danger ever of entering starvation mode. I had lots to lose, but I also developed habits of exercise daily. Perhaps because I had 200 pounds to lose, I still had plenty of time to learn the new habits and lifelong eating patterns and get them engrained. I don't think increasing my carb counts or eating even larger cuts of meat would have been advisable to simply experience slower weight loss.

To that end, I don't think it is rapidity of weight loss that is necessarily the crux, but it might be crash diet motivation -- having the "I need to lose X by <this date>" mentality, and then focusing on the loss rather than learning from the journey. Ideally, how quick you get to goal only lengthens up the time you time you spend in maintenance; it certainly does not shorten the learning process.

Re: Is slow steady weight loss - the best way?

Having lost both faster and slower, I'd say that my head is more with it when I lose slower.
This time it feels like it's going to stick. There are weeks that I don't lose and I know I'm doing things right and it will happen when it happens. Last time I lost it so fast I didn't have a chance to get my head around the fact that I was smaller before I started re-gaining. Every day was a struggle.

Slower losses let you make the mental adjustments necessary to keep it off.
