  • Arthritis in the Knees & Exercise

My arthritis is acting up these past few days and I'm having trouble exercising. Just walking hurts like the dickens. I keep looking at my exercise bike and planning to get on it, but looking and planning is as far as I've gone. Stretches, squats, getting up and down to and from the floor is killing me.

So, my question is this: If you have extremely sore knees that hurt whenever you move them, what do you do for exercise that isn't too painful?

Hi Kate, I tend to ride my bike as that is no impact, just spin. You could look into a water aerobic class which would also be a no impact on the knees. The local YMCA would have a pool or if you have a veterans hospital (ours is a warmer pool water there) so that also makes it easier on your joints. Good luck!

      I'm sorry ..

If you haven't tried it yet, I highly recommend glucosamine/chondroitin for joint pain. I developed hip pain from running a few months back and the GC has totally obliterated the pain and now I am pain-free, (even through a 26.2 mile marathon last Sunday!) Its amazing stuff. I would also recommend increasing the amount of FISH OIL (omega 3) that you are taking .. its great as an anti-inflammatory!

      Hope you feel better!

Thanks, Kathy and Betty! I never thought of water aerobics or supplements. I'm not real informed on all this even though I've been doing this for awhile now. I love this place! I always learn something new!

          Hello Kate,

I am a fellow sufferer, I have Rheumatoid Arthritis, and have also found that Glucosamine/chodroitin with MSM works wonderfully. I also add to my daily routine Super Omega-3 which has been a life saver the combination is perfect. Also when taking Glucosamine/Chodroitin with MSM you much add at least a 500mg. to 1000 mg. of vitamin C ,( I take 1000 mg.) This helps with metabolizing the supplements. One fairly priced company is Swanson, the prices are very reasonable. I buy my Super Omega-3 from Life Extention, because it has the best of all that I need. Hope this helps. Pru

My mom has knee problems, and she ALSO takes glucosamine/chondroitin to lubricate her joints. For exercise she does the stationary bike, because it's gentle on her knees. Sometimes she WILL go for walks, but her doc says only a mile at a time.
