  • Airplane seats

DH and I have the oppurtunity to take a trip this sring/summer on behalf of my inlaws. We were thinking of Atlantic City, but they are pushing us to go to Vegas. Now, I would love to go to Vegas, but I refuse to tell them the real reason I don't want to go is because of the airplane seats. I haven't flown since my honeymoon 7 years ago and I weighed about 210 then. I remember feeling very self-concious about how I filled up the seat then. No way am I going to get on a plane and take up two seats and I just don't think it's feasible to think that I am going to lose another 70 pounds by the end of June, which my husband thinks is possible. Last year he lost over 100 pounds in 6 months by doing the Paleo Diet and has kept it off. The weight just melts off him, but it doesn't on me. Just the thought of getting on a plane right now makes me feel panic-y. Ugh!!!! Thanks for listening.

Awwww, don't quit living your life "until!"

You are no bigger than a full grown man and you can fit in an airplane seat. I am the same height as you and was very close to your weight and I fit.

Oooo, I wish I could go to Vegas!

Cynthia my dad lives out in vegas and I flew out to see him when I weighed 277 and I fit (barely) in the seat and could even buckle the belt (although I should have asked for an extender). YOU most certainly can get out there on the plane. Go, have fun! You WILL enjoy it!

        Hey Cynthia...

I know EXACTLY how you feel. I'm always so nervous when I first board a plane...worrying about embarrasing myself and not being able to fit...but I'm happy to report that I've always managed to squeeze in. Now, it's certainly not the most comfortable fit but I fit nonetheless. and that was next to a stranger. Having your husband next to you will be even better because he won't mind if you take up a little of his room. LOL I did have to ask for a seatbelt extender but I just asked the first flight attendent I saw when I boarded the plane and they brought it to me without drawing any attention. You go and enjoy your time in Vegas. You'll be glad you did!

          I'm sure your fit, but...

I can't think of a better reason to sign up for an exercise challenge to speed up the shrinking process.

Thanks guys, I guess I was just feeling sorry for myself yesterday. Sadie and Patty, you guys are so right. I do tend to not live my life by waiting until... That is a very hard habit I need to break. Miss Phode, can you tell me more about the exercise challenge? I'm not able to do a whole lot, but I have started walking with my step-mom and I've got a new Tai Chi dvd I want to try out.

                  Re: Airplane seats

Anyway you could fly first class/business? It wouldn't be financially possible for us but the seats are bigger. In six months I imagine you will be well below 250lbs. Try to sit on the aisle with your husband. That way you will only be "crowding" him. You might need to ask for a belt extender but I'm sure they get asked for that a lot. It also depends on how you carry your weight.

Exercise a ton to get those inches off!

I have avoided flying since I visited the states in 2004. My youngest was 8 months old. I was around 220lbs then. I have gained more weight and the last vacations I avoid flying. My husband is being firm with me and said we ARE flying somewhere this July. I am going to just try to get as much weight off as I can. It helps me not want to cheat because I want to fit in my seat better.

I do hope that you go!

                    Re: Airplane seats

the last time I flew I was over 350 pounds. Asked the flight attendent who seemed friendliest for an extender.....since I flew with my son, we put the seat rest up and there were no problems.

Go have a wonderful time, enjoy yourself, win big if you gamble and be worry free.
here is a website that you can look up that will tell you about the seat sizes ect on planes. http://www.seatguru.com

by the time you go on your trip you will have lost weight and inches

                      Re: Airplane seats

I just flew to Vegas at Thanksgiving and was close to 320 unfortunately...the seat was fine, it's the seatbelt I was worried about...Both were fine...

Now when I flew home to S.Dak for Christmas - that was another story, we flew on a little DC-30 puddle jumper...and that seatbelt was nearly unbuckleable...like scarily unbuckleable. But there was a gentleman on there that just asked for an extension...I would have bruised my fat stomach rather than swallow my pride and ask for an extension....

Vegas, however, was fabulous - and I certainly wouldn't get too anxious about the plane ride just yet... you've got plenty of time to lose some weight and be more comfortable!

                      Good Luck!

                          Re: Airplane seats

I just ran across this post, and thought I'd give ya my input.

I travel alot on vacations, it used to be once every month or more and my first time being as heavy as I am, I was so nervous about 'fitting'. My sister told me to ask for an extension for the belt, I was so glad she did, or I would never have thought of it. They are really good about getting them and giving them to you quietly.

I always try to raise the arm before I sit, but if it isn't possible, even at my size, the couple hour flights I can handle it - even if a little squished in. I also always asked before the flight if any seats were open with no one next to them.. they are great at moving you if it's not a full flight.

I always figure, these people aren't ever going to see me again anyway, so why worry about what they 'think'. We certainly aren't monsters, we're just fluffy!

Southwest Airlines is the only one I know of that makes larger people buy two seats on any kind of regular basis, and they will refund the second seat if you don't use it. So far, my dh and I have been able to use a coach airline seat up to 340 pounds with a belt extender without buying an extra seat on any of the other airlines. Losing the weight has made travel much more comfortable and fun. However, we have never waited for any magical weight to go out and enjoy ourselves.
