  • A couple of questions...

I don't have the 2002 book yet so I am doing the best I can until it arrives. It should be here today. Yay.

What I was wondering - and haven't been able to find a conclusive answer - is about fats. I know that this isn't supposed to be a low-fat diet, but I am wondering what actually happens when you have

    a) too little fat

    or

    b) too much fat

The reason I ask is because I am trying to make sure that my choices are healthy ones. For instance, I have two eggs scrambled with pork sausage (no carbs) each morning. Would it be better to use a meat that is naturally more low in fat like a regular ground beef or maybe turkey sausage? Does it matter one way or the other? Will I achieve better results one way or the other?

Or maybe... the types of fat that are better? Would it be better to get more of my fat through something like olive oil rather than a more fatty meat? Does it matter one way or the other?

I don't know my exact percentages. I am following the rules of induction but I find fitday hard to use because the numbers just aren't accurate for some of the foods I eat and I have to enter manually when I have time. I know I need to find the time to do that, but in the meantime... any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!!!

    Re: A couple of questions...

I'll give you my personal experience as thats all i can really go by...

If i dont eat enough fat my weightloss seems to stall, if i eat right on 65% i will steadily lose weight and if i eat above that, (i generally hit around 70%) i lose a tad faster.

I think its better to get your fats via natural ones, think back to the olden days, lol.... what was available to them then? just those natural fats, I stick with fatty cuts as much as possible.

Thanks Emma. That helps. I am seeing how important it is to keep track of percentages. I haven't really done that yet. My induction ends this weekend and I want to proceed up to the next rung and do it properly.

I see what you mean about the natural occuring fats. Thanks.

I think Emma is right on. I don't think you really need to worry about it, just concentrate on natural fats. Some people start eating way to many processed meats (hot dogs, sausage, pepperoni, etc..) and it will stall them or have hidden additives that effect them. You can of course have some of these items, but it is much better in calculated moderation.

        1-Atkins WOE/WOL plan works

3-Atkins WOL is part of the puzzle, but is not the entire thing.

Thanks! You know, I was thinking about the processed meats. I try to stay fairly unprocessed using things like organic hotdogs (no carbs or nitrates) and similar products, but... I noticed that the sausage I eat is zero carbs and all the sausage products listed on fitday have carbs. So, could there be hidden carbs?

The reason I ask is because I am thinking... if I have hidden carbs in several products I eat over the course of a day... that could add up to several carbs. So... the green olives I buy are 0 carbs, but most aren't. The sausage is 0 carbs, but most aren't. Even the havarti cheese is 0 carbs. I have been using land-o-lakes "light" butter (just because that is what we happened to have) and it is 0 carbs. There might be other products too, but my general thinking is... if they all have trace amounts, how many carbs am I actually eating each day and how do I know?

No cheese is carbless even if listed as such. To be safe you might want to count either .5 or 1g per ounce. With Sausage, if it has spices in it, it will have some carbs (I buy mine at the meat shop, which can be hard to do), to be safe I would also count a carb per serving.

That is great the hot dogs have no nitrates, but again even if listed as no carb, they will still have some, I would also recommend counting either .5g or 1g per dog.

Your butter should be carb free, but I would suggest that the next time you buy butter to just regular real butter.

            Good Luck.

              Re: A couple of questions...

I'm not sure why the hot dogs would have carbs... here is the ingredient list.

Organic Grass-Fed Beef, Water, Contains Less Than 2% Of The Following: Sea Salt*, Organic Spices, Organic Garlic Powder, Organic Paprika, Celery Juice*, Organic Onion, Lactic Acid Starter Culture (Not From Milk).

I have counted them as 0 all along. I am pretty sure about the lack of sugar in the sausage too. I will have to check.

                  Re: A couple of questions...

A good thing to remember is that anything that is a plant has carbs. Milk products also have naturally occuring carbs--like cheese and cream.

Because of government regulations, if something has less than .5g carbs per serving, the nutritional label can say "0g" carbs. If something is .99g-.5g, it can say "less than 1g".

So imagine eating multiple foods that are abiding by this "less than .5g" rule. You are consuming carbs even though the label doesn't show them. That's why it's always necessary to check the ingredient list.

That is where they get ya. They can put on the label 0 carbs if it less than .5 g of carbs a serving.

I get it. Duh...lol. I was thinking sugar ingredients rather than vegetable carbs. Sheesh. Thanks for clearing that up.

It may be silly but I start my daily count with 3 carbs just for that reason ..... so if I am trying to get 20 carbs a day I really count on 17 that way I am not over or at least not over by alot ..... I don't know if thats smart or ot but it's what I ahve done since I started.

I have actually been doing okay in the weight loss even with the few carbs I might be adding... suppose I would have done better if not for those. But, now I know what I need to do. Thanks for all the answers and advice.
