  • New and Needing to Lose.....

    Hello All:

My name is Ali and I am new to this forum. I have been reading alot of your posts and finally have decided to join in. I am 37 years old, married and have 3 beautiful children. We live close to Columbus, Ohio and are huge buckeye fans! Well to let you know a little bit of what I want to gain on these forums is how to lose weight and keep it off! I have always been a size 8-10 my whole life until after I had my last two children. Along the way I gained weight for many different reasons and have now been unable to get it off. I have alot of health problems, really too many to lists, which is one reason why the weight will not come off as easy as it used to (also, my age and metabolism not working anymore, does not help!) I now have over 100+ lbs to lose and feel so helpless. Like many of you, I have tried many different diets with no success. I am now hoping to try Atkins and be successful, otherwise my doctor wants me to get lap band surgery which I do not want to get. I am going to try as much on my own as I can to lose the weight before I go the surgery route.

After reading your posts, I just feel so confused. I don't understand how eating all this food can help you lose weight. I am reading the 2002 version of Atkins right now and I am sure it will explain it later on in the chapters, but coming from someone who never eats and still cannot lose the weight, I have to retrain my mind to believe that if I do eat I will lose weight. This seems so crazy to me!!!! I have looked at the before and after pics so I must believe it is possible. I just want to do it right and have this be the last diet I ever go on!

Well thank you all so much for letting me share. I hope to get to know all of you better very soon. Also, what is the Roll Call?
    Take Care,
    Ali

Re: New and Needing to Lose.....

    Hi Ali,
Read the whole book and you'll understand more. I was on Atkins before and just did so so because I only read the parts of the book I thought I needed. This time is so much better because I've read the whole book and I understand so much more. A couple of things I've learned are you need to drink all of your water, at least 64 oz. When you think your done drink some more. I was completely addicted to diet coke and I gave it up. I had the caffeine headache for 10 days but it's finally gone. I don't want to drink anything that would make me feel that bad again! Another thing is if I don't eat enough I don't lose. Your body needs the food for energy to move. I'm on day 12 of induction and I have so much more energy. Before I would sit on the couch and think of what I should do, now I do it. Everyday is getting better. Good luck and don't give up. your worth it!

Thank you for your welcomes, Okay, I have another question.... Do you have to eat a certain amount of calories per day and also do you have to have Breakfast, Snack, Lunch, Snack and Dinner then Snack everyday? If so, why do you need to continuously eat?

Re: New and Needing to Lose.....

First of all, congratulations on making the decision to do something better in your life. First of all, I would say read the Sticky Threads in the 14-Day Induction forums. There is wonderful info there. http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...ad.php?t=51255

By reading this info, I was encouraged to do a "clean induction" that is, no eating off the plan. I felt if I could commit to 14 days, I'd be so impressed that I'd keep it up. Read other people's stories. You can learn from their success and their failures. This plan is SO do-able. What freaks people out is the fact that we don't count calories. The reality is, calories do count!! It's just so much easier to count up to 20, than thousands. I don't know about you, but I could easily eat a whole package of oreos, and wash them down with a quart of milk, but nothing could entice me to eat a whole pound of bacon at a time. I'm fond of meat, but I cannot gorge on it. Same with mayonnaise. Yes, they contain lots of fat, but your body's reaction to them is different than when you eat mega-carbs. I can easily gorge on chips, fries, etc. This diet automatically limits your calories if you follow the plan to the letter, especially during induction. Plus it limits your cravings. For me, it was almost immediately.

Atkins gets a lot of bad press, because people think it's the bacon, butter, cheese diet. Actually, the science of it is what makes the diet work. You're teaching your body how to run primarily on fat (that we eat and that we wear as extra pounds) instead of sugar (that we eat so much of). It's easier for our bodies to run on sugar, but sugar creates insulin spikes then after this, there's a crash and you're hungry again, even if you consumed mega calories.

Just think: if my normal diet is eating whatever I wanted with no limits, and instead, I stopped eating pasta, rice, potatoes, sugars, then added green veggies (that I normally wasn't eating much of at all) wouldn't my calorie intake automatically go down? This diet just eliminates certain aspects of a person's total diet, then gradually adds things back until you know what your body needs to continue to lose weight. Don't freak out about the calories. Just know, it works if you do it to the letter. Just commit to be cheat-free for the next 14 days. You'll be so amazed by not being hungry, and regulating your blood sugar that you'll be soon helping others who think it's just too good to be true. I'm on day 12 of induction, and I'm a believer!!!

Re: New and Needing to Lose.....

Hi everyone, I am also new to this diet. I started off with a personal trainer in Dec. and ran out of sessions and couldn't afford her any longer. Scary thing is I then went into desperate mode and tried the cabbage soup diet Yikes huh? well it was fine especally after losing 10 lbs in a week but I knew deep down after what my trainer told me...that protien in very important, I had to do something different. That why Im here now. I have lost 18lbs in 3months and need to lose 50-60 more to be at a good weight. I believe that Atkins is the right way to go. Im also confused on the fats. how could it be good for you? I guess what matters is following the diet and being successful. Obviously my diet before was no good to myself anyways.
I am also a mother of 3 children and yes somewhere after the 2nd child my body went wacko. If you would like to partner up and support each other that would be great. I started yesterday too. good luck on your diet!

Re: New and Needing to Lose.....

Thank you all for your advice! I did really good yesterday. I was surprised. It was extremely hard at night though, I was really really craving carbs. I was proud of myself though because I asked my husband to put up the easter cookies and poptarts we had in the cupboard because I knew I would get up in the middle of the night and want to have some (this is my evil time of the day, I used to like and get up and eat something sweet to help me go back to bed!!!)

So yesterday I had the following:

                1 Piece of sausage patty
2 Cups of coffee w/ Splenda

Piece of Cheddar cheese for snack

Homemade Tuna Salad w/ broccoli and cheese on the side

Slice of Celery and piece of cheese for snack

Tuna Salad and side salad for dinner

Snack last night, piece of cheese and a few bites of tuna salad

                96fl oz of water

What do you all think? This is the best I have done thus far and I hope to continue to fight my cravings! Julie, yes, I would love to become partners through this. How are you doing so far?

Re: New and Needing to Lose.....

Hi Ali, welcome to the club! I was also threatened by the lap band surgery or the bypass surgery, nowadays it has become one of the most "easiest" ways to lose weight, but you also lose a lot of other things, I respect who does this surgery but I question myself how is it posible that something so drastic has become so common.

I have to lose 170 pounds, so I was the perfect candidate for a bypass, so then I started doing research and realize that this action was going to change my life forever! Yes you lose the weight, of course! your stomach is being mutilated! but then I was going to be condemn to monthly visits to the doctor, a diet doctor, a psychologist and a personal trainer, for the rest of my life! the risk of emergency surgery for posible damages in my stomach, hair loss, the risk of anemia or osteoporosis because of the lack of vitamines and minerals, constants stomach burn and a lot of other terrible consecuences just because I wasnt able to close my mouth, I was going to let someone close my stomach!

That is how I thought, but then I found Atkins and realized that I didnt need to close my mouth but to get rid of all the bad information I have accepted as true, like the one that tells us that if we eat a lot, no matter what we will gain weight, Atkins have prove me that this is a big lie.

So please, dont think of doing a surgery before you investigate the risks and ask yourself how is it possible that they invented something so cruel! they condemn you to never ever again eating something and enjoy it cause you could go in to a crisis! and the most rare thing, I have seen people get this surgery and yes, they lose weight in a year or two, but then they start gaining weight again! For me, this is the proof that the problem is not on how much you eat, but how well you eat, and specially how decided you are to be a healthier person.

And I question the surgery, and wonder, if someday they will "invent" a surgery for smokers, can you imagine? mutilating the loungs and letting only a quarter of them in use, so if you smoke you will choke or die? nice way to quit smoking??? I wonder how many people would do this surgery, I DONT THINK SO!
I dont think it would become a fashion like lap band or bypass
                  hahahaha I love this analogy

So give Atkins a chance Ali, I can assure you it works, you can find all the inspiration among all this wonderful people that are constantly posting and showing us its possible, but I do realize, you have to make an effort to eat better, you have to exercise, you have to find constant motivation, like in the surgery you have to do the same things, the diference is that you are saving your stomach and your pride.

                  Take care and welcome again

Re: New and Needing to Lose.....

                    Welcome Ali and Julie !

Either buy or check out a copy Doctor Atikins' New Diet Revolution 2002. When you read it, this Way of Eating (WOE) makes perfect sense. You will be amazed at the results of Induction - you will have more energy (once you get past the first two or three days of withdrawls from sugar, caffeine, white flour, etc), your cravings will be gone (or greatly diminished), your mood will be better, and you will lose weight. Induction is a great jump start and motivator!

Just follow the rules of Induction, drink at least 64oz of water, take supplements, and get some exercise in.

There are so many yummy things to eat...

                    - Parmesan crusted chicken (dip the chicken breasts into an egg bath (beaten egg), coat with parmesan, and pan fry)
                    - Lettuce salad with cucumbers, celery, peppers, hard-boiled egg, and bacon crumbles
                    - Shrimp scampi
                    - Vegetables sauteed in butter or olive oil with garlic or other sugar-free seasonings
                    - Deviled eggs (made with full-fat mayo and mustard if you like)
                    - Pork rinds and sour cream (mix some chili powder and garlic powder into the sour cream)
                    - Vegetables dipped in blue cheese

...the list goes on and on.

This site is great ! Keep coming back.

                    YOU CAN DO IT!

                      Hi everyone,
On day 3 and feeling really good. I cut my caffine out yesterday and I'm actually doing fine. I don't have any withdrawls, I'm thinking I took care of that issue when I was on the cabbage soup diet. Well yesterday I feel I ate really well and had 19 carbs for the total:
                      Breakfast: eggs and sausage
Lunch: 4 slices of bacon and asparegus
                      Snack: Beef Jerkey
Dinner: Steak, Salad w/blue cheese dressing, saute mushrooms, olives
                      64oz of water
                      2 glasses of Diet Rootbeer

Kristine those ideas above are great, thanks!

Ali, I live close to Seattle and have alot of family in Dayton & Columbus. My maiden name is Lay. My mom and dad had lived there years ago. I haven't visit there in like 10 years. Too funny
