  • Hello Century Club

    Hi Everyone,

My name is Kate and I have over 100 pounds to lose. Been doing Atkins for nearly two weeks and have so far lost about 4kg ( I say 'about' because I only weigh in weekly, tempting though it is to hop on the scales at other times). I lost 3.5kg in the first week.

A couple of things, I am getting a little disheartened because I realise just HOW much weight I have to lose - that seems very daunting!

Secondly, try as I might, I have great trouble sacrificing my morning cup of tea with a bit of milk. Is this going to be terribly harmful? I know that milk is not in the Induction list of acceptable foods - but you try parting an englishwoman from her tea!

The board seems great, everyone is very supportive.

    Thanks,

    Keetje

      Hello Kate,
Welcome to Century Club. Chick is right, how about using your allowed cream for Induction in your tea? You're allowed 2-3 tablespoons of heavy or light cream a day. It's extrmely important that you follow the Induction rules to the T to get the maximum results. Do you have DANDR 2002 book? Extremely important to read it and go by what it says.
I understand about how you may get overwhelmed by the amount of weightloss. Make short term goals and focus on them. Reward yourself when you reach those goals. Like a new blouse or a manicure. Whatever it is you fancy. Remember, this isn't a diet, it's a lifestyle. You're making lifestyle changes for life. It's not a race. As long as you're working the plan 100%, you'll get 100% results.
      Again, welcome Kate.
      Sincerely, Sherri
P.S. Make sure you come on over to Century Club Roll Call each day and check in. A great way to meet people and make new friends that understand what you're experiences are with weightloss.

        Re: Hello Century Club

        Hi Keetjt,

I started this journey with 145 kgs. and my weight goal is 68 kgs. that means I have to lose 77 kgs to get to my goal, and I'm going to do it! By now I have lost 17 kgs. I can't say that I haven't feel like you, I'm in my third month with atkins, and have been losing weight with just a coulpe of weeks where my scale didnt show any loss and I just pass thru a crisis like that... I have so much to lose and its going to take me so much time! but when I sit down and start to count how much time it will really take me, I get better, I made a calendar, an objective one, and that helps, just remember that when you are doing an effort to gain your healthy weight, each day you are getting closer, if you go back to your common way of life, the one that has taken you to your current weight, its logical that it will continue to make you heavier, but if you do what we all know we need to do to lose the weight, each day you will be lighter.

So what do you want to do? go back to who you were and get worse? or do you want to see how great you can be and prove yourself you have it in you and each day get closer to your true you?

        Have a great day,

        Rosa

          Dear Chicklady

Amazing, I read your message as I sipped my tea, with cream in it! It's not too bad actually, but I think I put a little too much in it! Nevertheless it is a good substitute.

          Thank you for your reply.

            Hello Sherry,

Thank you so much for your reply. I understand the necessity of staying 'on plan' - that is why the tea was bothering me so much. I am trying to substitute herbal teas and green tea for ordinary tea - but it is that first cup of tea in the morning that gets me.

I think between us, we have come up with the answer - so I can have my morning tea and stay legal.

I love your pix btw, what a transformation.

Also thank you for the advice about the mini goals. I thought some up for myself last night. First is to get to 113 kg, which is the weight I was when I went into hospital for a minor op the year before last. Second is to get to 102.5kg, which will get me under a bmi of 40. Obviously after that it will be 99kg...I haven't thought any further than that at the moment, but I think that's a good start.

Great idea about the roll call, that will help to keep me on plan and focused.

            Thanks for all your advice.

              Dear Pinkbatel,

Thanks for your reply, I think you have put it very clearly - if I go back to the way I was before I started this plan I would end up even more overweight and even more restricted in what I can do.

I keep reasonably active - but the more kilos I put on, the more difficult it has been getting. I like to ride my bicycle, but my backside has been getting very sore because of all the weight being concentrated in one area!!!! (TMI for some, I am sure).

So yes, you are right, I can only benefit from doing this.

              Thank you!

              Keetje

ps. I must translate my kilos into pounds like you so kindly translated your pounds into kilos for me.

Your very welcome Kate. I look forwrd to seeing you at roll call and here on the board. Also a great way to keep motivated is to join challenges and start a Journal. A great way to keep yourself accountable and keep track of your daily menu and activities. Also a great way for people to visit and to meet folks and make new friends. Great to here about your tea.
                Great goal setting too.
Thanks for your comment on my pics.
By the way, did you measure yourself? It's fun to go back and measure yourself each month to see how many inches you have lost. I have found that the measuring tape is a better friend than the scale. The scale has a tendancy to lie, LOL.
                Take care and I'll TTYL.

                  Hello Sherri,

Ah! the tape measure, yes! I measured up this morning - oooh dearie me! I have a major belly problem that needs addressing, most of my weight seems to be centred on my middle.

Thanks for thinking of me though.

                    Re: Hello Century Club

Welcome! You've gotten a lot of good advice, so let me just add, with that much weight to lose, try not to look way out in the future to the long term. Make reasonable short term goals and focus on each of them. Don't look ahead until you have reached each new mini-goal. Think up really good non-food rewards for reaching each goal. Take time to celebrate each goal reached.

About that belly fat--there have been studies showing that the fats in MUFA's (monounsaturated fatty acids) help rid us of belly fat. I have been using a lot of foods with the most MUFA's for a while, and not only is my belly smaller, my good cholesterol went way up and my bad dived. Two of my favorites are olives and avocado, both allowed on Induction. Nuts are also high, but you can't have those for a while. Here is a link to an article that will tell you more: http://health.msn.com/nutrition/arti...ntid=100188436

                    The Stealth Belly Flattener
The idea that fat can help you slim down isn't new. In 2001, Harvard researchers reported that moderate-fat diets actually produced better weight loss results in the long run than low-fat diets. But not until the Spanish study did researchers uncover the notion that a single type of dietary fat targets such a specific area of the body.
Monounsaturated fats (MUFAs for short, pronounced MOO-fahs) come from the healthy oils found in plant foods such as olives, nuts, and avocado. MUFAs have been linked to overall weight loss in previous studies, including a report published in the British Journal of Nutrition, which found that a MUFA-rich diet helped people lose small amounts of weight and body fat without changing their calorie intake. Another report found that a breakfast high in MUFAs could boost calorie burn for 5 hours after the meal, particularly in people with higher amounts of belly fat.
However, it's the additional health benefits that make this type of dietary fat so unique. Not only can it prevent and control type 2 diabetes and reduce the risk of heart disease (by lowering "bad" LDL cholesterol levels and boosting the "good" HDL), but a 3-year Italian study found that diets high in MUFAs from nuts and olive oil also helped reduce markers of inflammation, a known trigger for aging and disease.
Using this arsenal of data, Prevention's, nutrition director, Cynthia Sass, MPH, RD, constructed an eating plan that incorporates MUFA-rich foods into every meal (exercise is optional). Our goal: to make this a reduced-calorie diet that's easy to stay on because these good fats are satisfying and filling. To ensure our plan delivered, we also tested it on readers. The results were impressive. In a 4-week period, our 11 panelists lost a total of 91 pounds and 83 inches. Not only did each lose an average of 2 inches of belly fat, but they lost fat all over their bodies and felt more energized than they had in years.

Lots of us here have lost more than 100 pounds, and we now love the way we eat. It seems daunting right now, but as the pounds come off and you get more energy, the time will fly by.

                    Sunny!
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

"Some men give up their designs when they have almost reached the goal; While others, on the contrary, obtain a victory by exerting, at the last moment, more vigorous efforts than ever before."

Thanks for the great idea about the MUFAs. I love olives and avocados - so that works very well for me. Olives are my afternoon snack. I am especially fond of the ones my local supermarket sells that are stuffed with feta cheese.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I have a copy of the latest book, which is getting pretty well thumbed now, its full of markers and I am fast becoming a bit of a diet bore to all my friends and family. My father is reading it at the moment because he has a lot of weight to lose (fat middles are a bit of a family failing, I am afraid).

The book goes everywhere with me, just in case I am a bit unsure about anything.
