  • I think I am doing something wrong???

    Hello,
    Well, I am wondering if you all can help me. I don't think I am eating or measuring my carbs. right when it comes to my vegies. Just say I was only going to eat Zucchini for my vege all day long. If I had used 10 of my carbs. elsewhere how many cup of Zucchini could I have, and how would I measure it precisely? Same for other vegies. I have only been eating maybe a cup of vegies a day because I was saving carbs. but when I saw the pie at fitday.com I was shocked at what it said about the fat intake. EEkkk and then I looked at some of the vegies and now I am really confused... HELP PLEASE???

    Hi Sue. What is your fat/carb/protein ratio in Fitday telling you? Most people around here aim for 65/5/30. I myself like my fat to be a little higher than that.

    As for veggies, you could chop your zucchini and measure in a 1 cup measuring cup (measure it raw). That's normally what I do. Once you've done it for a while you'll be able to eyeball a cup of veggies. Honestly though, no one got fat from having a few extra chunks of zucchini, especially considering how much fibre is in that veggie. Based on Fitday, you could eat 5 cups of raw zucchini to equal 10 net grams of carbs.

      Remember, too, that you need to eat 2 cups of salad and 1 cup of "other" veggies a day, OR just 3 cups of salad. Eat your veggies!

        Using the amounts of veggies suggested in the book, you actually don't get that many of your 20 grams of carbs from them in Induction, even though Dr. Atkins says the majority of your carbs will come from veggies. Salad (like romaine for example) has almost no carbs in it. Three cups has only 1 gram of carbs. That doesn't sound like "the majority" to me.

          Use the higher carb veggies too, like peppers and jicama. Man does not live by lettuce alone

            Hahaha, that's so true. I'm hooked on the raw cauliflower with caesar dressing right now. Mmmmm....oh, oh, and celery with cream cheese.....

              Thank You all for your help. Yes, I was not getting enough vegies for sure. My menu was something like 2 eggs with bacon for Breakfast, shake for snack, hamburger patty with cheese for Lunch, bar for snack and then chicken with about 1/4 cup of green beans. I just recently learned that for net carbs you also subtract the sugar alcohols... never knew that. That is why the bars are 2 net carbs even though they say 8-10. Thank you all ... now I am off to eat.

                Are you using Atkins bars & shakes? They are known stallers for many people. If you read the ingredients there are numerous items that are not Induction friendly. Just wanted you to know.

                  Also don't forget to subtract the fiber gr from the carb grams--thats your net carbs for the food. That is the number you count.

                    The Salad veggie's--- in the list-- also supply needed fiber and the enery they provide will be your new found enery as well.
                    and by reading the posts I have found several salad recipes that are so yummy.

                      Re: sugar alcohols. There are two kinds of people....the ones who will stall or gain weight using them, and the kind who will get diahrea from using them. Maltitol, the most commonly used one, actually provides 2.4 calories per gram....therefore, only about half of the carbs don't count....unless you're one of the "lucky" (read: diarhea) ones. Erythritol only provides .2 (thats "point" 2) calories per gram....the closest to truly being zero on the glycemic index.
                      While the best advice is to avoid them, it's not always the easiest, or desired, way to go for everyone. So, my advice, watch your bodys reaction and listen to what it is telling you. There are now products coming out made with ogliofurctoside (spelled wrong, I'm sure) that is a naturally derived 100% fiber that tastes sweet. It, and the products made with it, are quite pricey!
