    Help!

Does anyone know of any internists/general practitioners in the Atlanta, Georgia area (DeKalb or Rockdale County) who support the low carb WOE? I went to the doctor today and he was not even hearing me on the low carbing. He said 1. Atkins will kill you 2. I am eating too much meat regardless of how it is cooked (I mentioned grilled and baked) 3. I should not eat meat every day because I am diabetic and need to follow a low fat program 4. When you eat a diet high in fat, it causes your insulin to work ineffectively, which in turn causes your fat cells to get larger, which in turn makes it harder to lose weight. 5. There is a study out there where two groups of men were followed. Group one at a diet consisting of 65% calories from fat and group two ate a diet consisting of 10% calories from fat and as much sugar as they could tolerate. The high fat group had blood sugars above the normal range and the low fat group had blood sugars in the non-diabetic range.

I am thoroughly confused now. I know that when I am on plan, my blood sugars are great! Plus, I lost 30 pounds in a little over 2 months, including a three week unexplained stall. If I ate a low fat diet and all the sugar I could tolerate, my blood sugars would be through the roof, and I'd gain double the 30 pounds, or more, I've lost! What's a girl to do?

Sorry I can't refer you to such a doctor in your area, or any for that matter. I'm originally from Augusta, GA and have been living in Germany now for almost 15yrs. From my experience, it does not matter where you live and what doctor you visit, you will almost always find that they do not support the low carb WOE. I did get lucky a few years ago with my family practitioner though. We did blood work before I started this WOE and then 3 months later. My first results were terrible. All of my numbers were way over borderline! After 3 months of low-carbing, my numbers had gotten dramatically better, well under borderline in all areas and my FP was amazed! He told me to keep doing what I'm doing to stay healthy.

BTW, I definitely agree with your comment on eating low fat and as much sugar as you want. That's definitely untrue. My brother has diabetes and eats a healthy, low fat diet. He does like enjoy eating sweets, but he always has to be careful with the quantity because his numbers will spike. I feel that most doctors end up giving us false information because they know so little about the effects of low carb lifestyles. Either that or they would rather have us all remain obese with ailments to make more money.

For 100+ years, diabetes was treated with an effective low carb diet (see Banting).
Doctors are slowly coming back to that. Yours is obviously not there yet.
