  • If you were interviewed on TV for Atkins, what would you say

That's my question today. A person I knew yesterday told me I should really talk to someone on TV about my weight loss, they said someone could really be inspired by it. As a lark last night, I sent my brief story to a couple TV stations and the local newspaper that my one year Atkins anniversary was coming up and that I had lost over 160 pounds in that year. For good measure, I included one profile photo. I wasn't really expecting a response or at best "don't call us, we'll call you -- not what we are looking for at the moment."

I was mistaken. I had a local station call me at 3:45 saying they wanted to interview me. Great, when? Tonight at your house, she said. :yikes My wife would flip if I agreed to this and probably solve the question of how to lost the next few pounds. :guns I would filling a hole in their programming for the night, and she would love to interview me at home. I told her there was no way I could do it. Anyways, we agreed to do it in the near future. (Of course, they may very well forget about it as well since I didn't jump at today) I still have to figure out what I want to say just in case.

I guess the moral of the story is be careful whose advice you listen to. It may prove to be true.

Gee you know what to say...You've been talking to us for over a year. Tell them why, how and all the obstacles that we as Atkins believers have to endure. Just be yourself and I'll bet that will be the best interview in your entire life.

Yeah Kent, it would be easy, just show them a few befores and let your results do the talking.

Heck if I got on tv for atkins I'd probably shame myself by flexing what tiny muscles I have or showing off my stomach - scars, stretchmarks and all

Be sure to ask them if others will be interviewed for the story. A friend of mine was interviewed for a 100 pound weight loss by gastric bypass. She was mortified when the story ran because she thought they would focus on it as she had ... positively. They didn't. They interviewed a nutritionist and a trainer who both basically called anyone who could lose weight the "right way", lazy. Just be careful that their motives are to inspire as you have inspired us, Kent!

One of my favorite Atkins comparisons is that if you told people you were cutting out sugar and white flour from your diet and adding more veggies, you would be commended. Yet if you mention Atkins, which is more or less the same thing, you are condemned. See if you can work that into the interview somehow....

I'm basing my answer on past experience (not Atkins related, just being interviewed) and I say: WRITE DOWN some notes ahead of time! It's too embarassing to tell you my whole story, but I was interviewed by several newspapers and one reporter caught me first thing in the morning (on the phone). I joked around a bit and the joking part is what made the headlines - and I do mean THE HEADLINES - front page.

I might also ask to read the article before it's published. No kidding. It is amazing how they can twist stuff around -- and I'm an ex-newspaper editor and reporter and I still say that!

Focus on the good - better cholesterol counts if you know them, healthier foods, more energy, healthier lifestyle, etc.

Good luck!! We expect to see a copy word for word!!! (Headlines or not!)

Man I am so excited for you, and I would be scared to death also to say something stupid, but like Diva said... you've been talking to us for a year so what better practice do you need?!

Just don't mention the speedo pics your taking for us ladies here at CC. We don't want to cause a scandal or anything...

My advice is pretty much like everyone elses. For me personally, Atkins has just been learning to eat my veggies (and learning corn and potatoes don't count). Be sure to stress that you need to read the book and of course plug the board.
Based on a previous TV interview of my own, I would suggest making sure it is going to be presented positively. My interview was based on pollen counting so I can't be specific with my advice, but I will say that my interviewer barely talked to me and already had in her head how she wanted to present the story. And don't be afraid to say you don't have an answer to a question if you really don't. The reporter I talked to was aking me questions more appropriate for a phycisian so I just said, "I don't know." when she asked something I couldn't answer. Also, does your own docotr advocate following Atkins? If so, be sure and suggest that the reporter speak with him or her. If he/she chooses to speak with a phycisian at all I would want to know that she had an Atkins educated one as an option.

I would make sure to mention what Atkins is really like and what you typically eat, and that you don't use any low carb products, shakes, etc.

Most people have misconceptions about Atkins and how and why it works, and think it's all eggs and bacon and Atkins bars.

I hope you do the segment ( and record it for us and someone can convert it to wmv so we all can watch it).

I hope you do it and more and congrats on tooting your horn. Maybe more people can learn to lose weight and be more healthy because of you!

The first thing I'd say would be, "How much am I being paid for this interview?"

Honestly, I don't trust the news to report what you say accurately. They have a tendency to cut interviews to suit their needs, which might actually look negative depending on their intentions. I doubt they will tell you if they are conducting other interviews on the same subject, or what their true intentions might be. I'm not saying this to be a downer, but even if the interview goes awsome, they might twist it around some how. Out of a 10-15 minute interview, they'll cut it down to about 10-30 seconds.

On the other hand, it could be really awsome.

"Just follow your heart. That's what I do." (that's a quote from everyone's favorite movie, Napoleon Dynamite)
