  • Job update

Ha! I go from no posting to going crazy..that's what I get for a slow night at work.

As I mentioned before I was going to give up my job in EMS because I'm just not able to spend as much time with my family as I would like. I now have an additional dilema because my BF is no longer working (our choice so he could stay home with the baby while I work) so I am now the sole provider for a family of 3. Well I went and applied for the job with the county and did the test they require on 3/17. This past Saturday I got a letter advising me that I had received a 94%. I was pretty excited. Well I called the HR lady today to ask a question about another job, and she told me I had scored the highest out of 60 applicants! That made me feel so good. Unfortunately there aren't any openings, this was just for a recruiment list..but it made me feel like I do have skills outside of EMS.

Additionally.. since I moved to Lake Tahoe my commute has increased to 45 mins from 30. I am going to apply for the Sheriffs office in the town that I live in to be a dispatcher. My dad is the commander of the Sheriff's office there, but he won't be my direct boss, so there isn't any conflict there. I would start at $4 an hour more than I make now, plus county retirement and health benefits, and work less than a mile from where I live. Additionally they pay their employees that work at this substation an additional $500 a month for a cost of living differential because it's so expensive to live up there.. making my hourly about $20. It seems like a no brainer to me. While I would still be working shift work I would still see a lot more of my family, just by cutting down on my commute time. Plus I think they work 8-10 hour shifts vs. my 12 hour shifts. So wish me luck. I figure I'll work there until I can get in with the other job that I tested for.

WOW... that was long.. thanks for whoever read this long!

Ally that sounds like a slice of heaven compared to before. Congrats on scoring so high on the applicant testing. You could have job offers flying your way. But that's sometimes the way eh? Feast of famine in the job market.

Best wishes on being the breadwinner! hope you enjoy the job!

That commute and gas $ is critical. You are smart to consider all options.

Gee whiz, you want to get out of EMS? I can't imagine why. After all, getting puked on, bled on, peed on and pooped on by people who only called you because you are cheaper than a taxi to their doctor's office is the dream of every EMT and paramedic out there......<G>....

            You go girl!

Good luck on the dispatcher job -- it definitely sounds like a more ideal job than the commute and benefits you have now. Let us know how it turns out, Ally.

He should have the house /yard clean and dinner on the table and the clothes washed and be supportive of you if you are going to support him. OOps sometimes I forget my place...

                    Diva..

Don't you worry... we have that agreement already made. I work outside the house and in return don't have to do anything on my days off. He is in charge of the baby, the house, the groceries, cooking.. everything.. and I made it VERY clear that if that doesn't happen.. to make sure the door doesn't smack him in the arse on the way out. It just had to be this way. I have the skill set.. he doesn't.. and I refuse to put my daughter in daycare or with anyone other than a family member. It's working out so far. When it doesn't .. I'll be looking for a roommate!
