  • Shoe suggestions?

    Hi all,
I've been having increasing difficulty with my knees (pain and stiffness), as well as foot and ankle pain. I know the ultimate solution is to loose weight, but I was wondering if new shoes would help.

I've always worn a New Balance shoe that I think is listed as a "Cross Trainer." I'd like to find something with more impact cushioning - should I be looking at running shoes, walking shoes, something else?

    Any thoughts appreciated.

    Re: Shoe suggestions?

I have an issue with my knees as well. I really like the New Balance 992 and Nike Shox(with the 4 shox). I also really like Clark's Wallabees.

    I hope this helps some.

Have you spoken to a doctor? Orthotic inserts may help with foot pain. They made a huge difference in my life.

I swear by Easy Spirit - Travelons. They are "mules" and I wear them year round and have them in multiple colors even some of the other lines of Easy Spirit mules (leather, mesh combination, etc..) I haven't worn anything else on my feet for several years and I can walk everywhere.

Thanks for the info! I've got really big feet but the NB 992 and Nike Shox are available. I'll ask my doctor about orthotics at my next visit.

The ultimate solution will be to lose the weight, but you have to be comfortable enough to be active and on your feet to lose the weight. I finally settled on New Balance fit-walking shoes, and they have served me well. I got them large enough to be able to add gel inserts. It made the difference of barely being able to walk a few blocks to being able to walk briskly for 45 minutes. I had always had Rockport Walkers, but the NB were much easier on my feet and knees.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

              Re: Shoe suggestions?

I invested in a pair of Dansko shoes and they saved me. They aren't necessarily great for walking shoes, but they have been a lifesaver at work. I was about to quit my job because of standing and walking all day and could not handle the pain anymore. My boss told me about her shoes (she wears them instead of nurse clogs)and I bought a pair that weekend. I've had them now for over a year and wear them to work and also to clinicals. I can work a twelve hour shift now with minimal pain. I do start to feel discomfort after about eight hours but I have no severe pain at all any more. They are a bit pricey - I think mine were about $120 but I have literally worn them five or six times a week for the past year. They did take a few days to break in. Wow, I'm getting long-winded! The website for their shoes so you can take a peek is www.dansko.com.

Best of luck... I hope you find something that works great for you.

I have tried them all over the years, go with Sunny's idea and get the New Balance and add the gel inserts, they are a great choice for walking shoes.
