Re: today my doctor scolded me

I can tell you right now that many doctors know extremely little about Atkins. My endocrinologist (who is quite nice and learned and specializes in PCOS) didn't realize that I can have 3 cups of vegetables daily. She seemed a little thrown off of her rant when I mentioned that.

Straight up, this WOE is generally healthy. I wouldn't let the naysayers get to you until they have a legitimate reason to.

Re: today my doctor scolded me

There are doctors who promote atkins to their patients - they wouldn't if it was unhealthy. This doctor simply doesn't know the facts. Don't let that rob you of the opportunity to do something really good for yourself.

Re: today my doctor scolded me

Please know most doctors don't give a rip about results if what you're doing doesn't match their personal idea of what's healthy. I'm lucky I have a very cool doc who is older and very open minded. I went to see him February 11th and weighed in at 211 on his scale. His scale weighs me 6 lbs higher than my own. I'm going in for complete blood work on June 26th and I will weigh in somewhere in the 160's. At 211, he was beside himself. He recognized my son but didn't know who was with him. He didn't recognize me. That was size 14. I'm wearing 10's now and they're big on me! I'm telling you he was so beside himself, we didn't even cover some of my health issues. I thought he was going to take me out for lunch or something. He was sooooo proud I had found something that worked. Health care professionals who are open minded can be found. If you have a question about your ovaries or your cervix or uterus, ask your OBGYN. If it's about your overall health, don't bother. The truth is, your obgyn NEEDS to work for a well known medical facility!! Your obgyn chose the practice with highest of all malpractice insurance and probably is still paying off six figures of student loan debt. If weight watchers worked for everyone, there wouldn't be so many former WW members here. The fact is, for some people, weight watchers just means....watching your weight go up, up, up. No, thank you!! I'll keep doing what works for me. Don't be too terribly impressed by the reputation of a certain medical facility. I've lived in several different areas of the U.S. and overseas and I've never heard of that place or it's reputation. I come from a medical family and I haven't heard of it. You're doing what's right for you and that's what matters.

This WOL absolutely works if you work the formula. You've got to make sure you take your vitamins and supplements, drink your required water, get your exercise in and follow the plan to a T. Sounds like that's what you're doing!! You're going to fine. I promise. The older you get, the less what other's say to deter your DETERMINATION will bother you. Prove that doc wrong!!

Re: today my doctor scolded me

I have talked to other doctors that know how it works and they love it. It's her opinion. It is not the Medical associations stand point. Even weight watchers is beginning to low carb. One thing to remembre about opinions... Everyone has one. Please remember that Dr. Atkins was an MD too.

Re: today my doctor scolded me

As a lot of people have already said, there are so many misconceptions about this way of eating. Doctors, co-workers, family, etc have at one time or another been very upset with my decision to eat this way. However, once they understand the plan instead of assuming "eat two pounds of bacon per meal" they usually back down a little. I don't know your exact situation, but you know what is right for you. This is a healthy way to eat if you follow the plan. Honestly, you're doing an awesome job. You have a lot of support here.

              Best of luck and hugs,

Re: today my doctor scolded me

I have had people freak out and tell me how this is the most dangerous diet ever and I'm killing myself blah blah blah. I just look at them and smile and say thanks for letting me know but this is the first diet I have ever found that works, I feel satisfied AND I am healthier than I have ever been. The sterotype of a dozen eggs, a pound of bacon and a steak is what people who are uniformed and haven't read the book believe. Tell her that if she is truly interested she can read the book and then if she still has objections, you will take it into consideration. Those who are doing this the right way know that all we are doing is picking more healthy choices. Instead of starchy veggies, we have leafy ones or green beans or something healthy. Grilled chicken instead of breaded and fried etc. I am lucky that my parents are doing research and my step mother looks up recipes that I can have and the rest of the family enjoys them too. They see the changes and are proud.

Be proud of yourself. I am proud that you haven't quit. She doesn't know the details. Keep in mind that although she is a doctor; her specialty is not diet. If you feel good and healthy and you are seeing results then smile, nod and keep doing what you are doing. If you can, educate her. If your fiancee wants to quit; let him. You keep doing it and prove everyone wrong.

Re: today my doctor scolded me

next time someone asks you what diet your doing tell her your following a strict diabetes diet. Most of the time that shuts them up. The same doctor who told me to quit almost two years ago just told me to do it because he is on it himself. People who have diabetes eat this way and its considered healthy. Something about the Atkins Diet makes uneducated people very vocal.

Re: today my doctor scolded me

I read that ovarian cysts feed of sugar well more like, cancer cells feed of sugar, studies are starting to find the relationship between or health and our nutrition... So, I think that is something a lot of people can't say the last word about it... What I can asure you is that Atkins is a better way of eating if you are losing weight and feeling better... better than the way you were eating that make you gain weight... use the logic, that helps most of the times.

Im my personal case, I was suposed to have a ovary cyst and a uterin myoma, after 4 months in Atkins, I went to see the way this were reacting to my new way of eating and the doctor try to find them for about half an hour, and there was no cyst or myoma, they were gone. So, I guess things are diferent for everyone? you were told it was a bad diet for you... for me has been the best. See the facts, your personal facts, you decide.

Re: today my doctor scolded me

thank you all for the continuing overwhelming support! i have continued to do atkins (fiance has too!!!) and actually when i saw the same doctor for a followup ultrasound she asked me if i still was doing the low carb diet and i told her yes, and that i am consuming more water and protein and vegetables than ever before, and i enjoy getting the proper dairy requirements from cheese, and how much healthier i have felt and the energy i have from no longer consuming sugar! and when i stepped on the scale and shown her the weight i lost since i was last in the office it felt so great to rub it in her face! (well, i didnt rub it in her face, but she did take notice). Then she offered to have me consult with a nutristionist since diets arent her area of expertise (LOL i think she had a foot-in-mouth moment) and i politely declined.

i guess at the time when i originally posted i felt so defeated, thinking i was doing everything right and it was scary to have a doctor from such a respected hospital and brand to try to talk me out of it. lucky for me, i have some strong willpower! and just being able to go back and see her reaction that time just gave me such a confidence boost. now that i am off all the medication i was on to treat my cysts i am back to loosing my 1 lb a day and feeling great!

and again i wanted to thank all of you that have posted replies, you all are so wonderful and words cant describe how great it is to see that email in your inbox and another person with something positive and uplifting to say! i appreciate all of your support!
