  • Exercise Bike

I went looking for a buy today but did not buy. I checked 3 or 4 stores, with big price differences. I cannot decide if i should get the traditional seat, or the one where you are sitting down farther and you have back support. Any opinions?

I liked the recumbant exercise bike approach as the more comfortable you are the longer you are likely to exercise. We bought one two and half years ago, and haven't regretted the decision between that and normal exercise bike.

The recumbant bikes are nice....my only problem with them was when I was bigger, I would end up with bruises on my stomach and thighs when my thighs would hit my stomach while I was peddling. If you don't mind that though, it's a lot more comfortable then the regular bike.

I've had both. Put 10,000+ miles on my old "regular" upright exercise bike. It was good, but after about 6 miles it gave me a pain in an unmentionable place. I even tried replacing the seat and that made it better...but not great. DH bought me a recumbent exercise bike with a seat back for Christmas. That's ABSOLUTELY the way to go. It stretches a different set of muscles in a different way but it's so much kinder to that unmentionable area. I'll never go back to the old way. (By the way, I "compared" by staying in a hotel that had an exercise room with a recumbent exercise bicycle in it. If you're planning a trip any time soon, you might shop around for a hotel that has one.)

I bought a ProForm one with the same 250# limit, but it lasted well under my weight. I think the recumbant is better for stability as you are usually setting right on the body of the bike as opposed to a rod coming out of it.
