  • How long to stay in Extended Induction

I'm looking for some advice about how long to stay in extended induction. I had a problem staying cheat-free last week and one of the suggestions was to move onto OWL. BUT, I still have a l-o-n-g way to go with my weight loss. My plan was to stay in extended induction until I had lost half the weight I need to lose. That way I would still have 9 months to a year to move through the OWL rungs as I moved toward my goal. Thoughts? I am doing a clean induction again (day 2) and do not have any plans to cheat again because I want this to work!

Is there anyone here who continued losing at a good rate for 5 or 6 months on extended induction? Did the weight loss slow down when you moved to OWL? How much?

Thanks for any input and/or been-there-done-that advice.

Re: How long to stay in Extended Induction

In DANDR 2002, there is a chapter following the Induction Chapter that addresses when to move onto OWL. I felt safe with Induction and also had a long term goal with a lot of weight to lose. I was also seeing a physician who was very supportive of Atkins and he was monitoring my health indicators. I stayed on Induction for nearly a year. For me, it was the right decision. Your decision will be specific for your needs and the weight you need to lose.

When you are alone in your head, you are in a bad neighborhood.

There really isn't a rule as to how long you stay on extended induction, but if you are eating anything not on the induction list of approved foods then you really aren't on extended induction. You are just keeping your carbs low and haphazardly adding in certain foods, nuts and dairy seem to be the ones most often added. It is really better to add things in by the carb ladder but after adding them and seeing their effect you do not have to continue eating them. Your goal of being in the 100's by January the first is probably unrealistic. You would have to average over 3 pounds a week to do this. That is possible but over the long term losing 2 pounds a week is probably more likely. Good luck on your journey.
