  • An interesting observation

I was talking with a friend today (my boss's husband who started Atkins 4 weeks ago and has lost 34 pounds)..Yeah!!! Anyways, he was telling me that his doctor is thrilled over his blood-work from last week. Then he went on to tell me about an experience he had at his mother's house over the weekend. Apparently the whole family was together and the conversation came up about him losing weight. When he told them he was doing ATKINS, the family started ganging up on him. IT WILL KILL YOU. IT WILL MAKE YOUR KIDNEYS FAIL DR. ATKINS DIED FROM HIS DIET....you all know...the usual comments from people who don't know anything about Atkins. Well...I asked him how he handled their comments and here is what he said...

This is much like a bunch of crabs in a bucket. When one tries to escape, and almost makes it to the top...the other crabs see him almost succeeding and grab hold of his legs and pull him back into the bucket.

To him, his family was seeing him do something that the rest of the family should be doing...but doesn't have the will-power to do. So, their best defense is to make him fail so they can be right about their opinions that Atkins doesn't work. If it did work, then they would no longer have an excuse to stay fat. He said his whole family is very overweight. He has a teenage sister that is 300 pounds. He gave her the book and told her how to do it, so maybe she will follow in his footsteps and get out of their family rut. I hope so.

I am so proud of my boss's husband. He is exercising, eating right and really doing it. I enjoy hearing his excitement and seeing the changes that are taking place within him. He is bouncier and more energetic than I've ever seen him. Atkins really rocks!!

That's awesome Becky. I am so happy for him that he has finally found help. You are so sweet to help him through this. Tell him congrats on losing 34 pounds and getting good blood results! Woohoooo.

He's right about the crab bucket. There are so many in my family that would rather caution this WOL away, rather than try it for 2 weeks to see what happens. It's their excuse. But it sounds like your Boss's husband doesn't need an excuse anymore. He has seen the light!!
Maybe the rest of his family will get jealous and see the light too!!! All we can do it hope for the best.

    Thanks for posting this....

      yes congratulations for him!

it is horrible that people do such things, but it is so true. you are fat; you are miserable. get off your bum and do something about it instead of trying to break the willpower of people you love who are pulling themselves out of the grave and into a healthier lifestyle.

it is so hard to keep your will when people who love you try to bring you down, but kudos to him for staying strong!

To me it just shows me how lazy us humans are becoming. Instead of doing the research ourselves, we just listen to the media and agree with everything they say. I was one of those people too until a friend sent me the book to read and the rest is history.

I love the crab analogy...it's perfect. It's so neat to see that he's broken free of that mentality and isn't allowing himself to be influenced by it. Yay for him!!!

              Becky,

The "crab analogy" is so apropos. I have a sister-in-law who is in her 50's and weights close to what I weighted at my heaviest. She has a daughter who is in her 20's and weights in excess of 300 lbs.

My sister-in-law has seen me struggle with my weight for over 30 years. She's seen me lose, and then regain (with interest) all my weight. This is the first time she's ever seen me stay with something for 2 years...........................and lose over 150 lbs.

A few years ago, my sister-in-law lost about 100 lbs. by a low calorie, lo-fat diet. It took her only a short time to put it all back on, and now be at her highest weight. (Don't we all know that story?)

Several months ago, when I was nearing a hundred pound weight loss, she started asking me about "Atkins." I answered all her questions, but got the response that she couldn't do it because of this reason or that reason. I didn't debate the issue with her.

About 6 months ago, I bought and gave her the book. I told her to "just read it, and if it doesn't make sense to you, then use the book as a door jamb." She has never said another word to me about "Atkins" and I haven't bugged her about it.

The wife and I will be going back up there in two weeks. I had already made up my mind to talk to her about "Atkins" once again. I have also decided, no matter what my sister-in-law decides to do...........or not do, I'm going to talk to her daughter about my WOL.
