  • Anyone else ever heard of this? (copy from main forum)

I was talking with an extended family member on the train today and we were discussing exercise and diet, and he mentioned something I had never heard before. I was wondering if anyone else had ever heard of it, because it makes sense to me.

Here it is: While trying to lose weight, one of the tricks to use is to eat with your non-dominant hand. For example, if you are right handed, eat with your left hand, and vice versa. What this does is force the actual feeding process further up into your conscious thought process and you tend to eat slower, and realize you are full sooner because you have to think more about the action itself.

It makes sense to me. How many of us have unconsciously munched on whatever without thinking about it at all and then realize the bowl/plate is empty.

Anyone else ever heard of this?
    Jim

Never heard of it, but think it's a great idea. :yes

I'll be giving it a go as of my next meal and will let you know how I get on. Hopefully it will also help me to slow down and listen to my body more rather than just eating for the sake of it and finishing what's on my plate. (Although this has got a lot better since Atkins)

      Thanks for the tip.

            Yea-
I have, they say it slows down the pace of how fast we eat so we tend to eat less, never tried it though.

Heard of it for many years now. Problem for those of us who are ambidextrous...The only thing I seriously can't do lefty is throw. I do everything else pretty equally with both hands, though.

I know of people who also use chopsticks to eat more slowly. Yeah, well...... I can use chopsticks pretty well, too, so my way is to fill up on cucumber and hope that works

that sounds interesting. i eat everything with chopsticks, but unfortunately i'm pretty good with them so it doesn't slow me down. might try chopsticks with my left hand...

I will try the left handed eating. One of my problems is that I eat to fast. Habit from way back when.

We are liable to be labeled as this, Atkins eaters are very messy eaters!

Yes I have heard of that before from a doctor - he also said use a smaller plate and that way you eat slower and also it plays a trick on your mind by it seeing more food piled on a smaller plate it can trick it into thinking your eating more food.
