  • Overdosed

So I posted a vent last week about the negative conversation I had with coworkers about Atkins last week. Well, today, we had a department meeting and the coworker that was running the meeting brough candy for everyone. He brought 3 kinds of regular candy and 4 kinds of low carb candy just for me! How nice was that!?

Well, the bad news is I overdosed on the candy and now have the worst stomach cramps ever! And I know this stuff does that to me, but I still overdosed. Bleh.

        Learning to digest sugar alcohols?

I don't usually buy low-carb stuff, but the Rolos are being sold off at 20p a packet in a shop I visit every weekend and I can never resist buying a packet or two (they are usually 6 times that price!)

At the start, if ate more than one packet in a day (please, no flames, it was an experiment. Honest!) I would get the runs and a stomach ache - I put it down to the sugar alcohols not being digested so they just raced straight through me. They had no noticeable effect on my blood sugars no matter how many I ate.

But now, I don't seem to have *any* side effects from eating them.

I'm curious - does that mean my body is adapting in some way to the sugar alcohols? And if so, is it adapting by learning how to digest them? And if it's learning to digest them, is it going to to effect my blood sugar levels?

I've become a little nervous about continuing the experiment - but what do you guys think? Should I just play safe and stay off the franken-Rolos? Or would it be useful to the low-carbing world in general to carry on eating them to see they start to affect my blood sugars? I usually react very strongly to any sugar (I'm a severe reactive hypoglycemic) so I'm a perfect person to conduct the experiment.

What do you all think I should do?

Sorry to hear about the overdose of sugar alcohols, but at least your coworkers are respecting your choice now. My boss, whose now on Atkins, always used to bring donuts to staff meetings. I said if I'd eat one if she brought a sausage flavored one. At one meeting, she did that brought a couple sausage patties just for me. Glad to see your coworkers are coming around.

I firmly believe that Exlax stock dropped 200 points the day they invented low-carb candy with sugar alcohols and maltitol. How anyone could eat more than 2 or 3 small pieces and survive is beyond me. I tried the Russell Stover caramel drops at my daughter's house. I ate 3 tiny and I do mean tiny pieces and in 30 minutes my stomach sounded like a zoo. I heard noises that I had never, ever heard before coming from my insides. Needless to say within an hour I was worshipping the procelein god. Sugar alcohols and especially maltitol are EVIL! EVIL I TELL YOU!!! LOL

I LOVE the chocolate caramel crisp, but I only eat one once in a blue moon when its eat or cheat or die. Like at a movie when my DH is enjoying his cardiac arrest in a bucket and box! I do occasionally also suck a SF hard candy, when I'm baking and dying to nibble. Have found that if I stay within the serving suggestions I don't have stomach problems, but woe is me if I venture beyond....or should I say woe to those who live with me.
