    Hi All!

My name is Johnny and have a serious weight problem along with Type 2 diabetes and heart disease. I am 5' 11" and weight 376 lbs and had a heart attack on August 1st of last year. I have tried several diets and hate the word.

I recently was called on the carpet at work and was told I should seriously consider going on Social Security disability and after talking to my doctor who declared me totally disabled I put in my last day of work on March 28th 2005. I worked in a lumber mill for 36 years and was very hard work. I will be 58 on July 3rd. I am in the process of waiting for a decision on my disability which will more than likely take a lawyer to get the reward.

I have a twin brother who is on the Atkins diet and his weight has got down to 203.5 lbs and he was at 249.3 lbs. Since I love meat and vegetables it should not be a problem to stay on it. My goal is to lose 176 lbs and get down to 200lbs.....seems unsurmountable obstacle to over come.

I am on a road to death which is quite obvious as I have lost a brother and father to massive heart attack and died instanctly and my mother died instanctly of a severe stroke... My youngest brother has three stints in his heart and my twin brother has four stints in his heart and I just had one put in my heart.

I live in alot of pain and my mobility is limited and personal grooming is very difficult and requires assistance from my wife at times. There are times I just soon be under the ground and get it done with and let the world move on but my wife loves me and wants me to hang around so we can go to Florida and live out our lives with her two sons and grand kids.

I just don't know if I can fight one more time or not....Johnny :help

            Welcome to the Century Club!

Don't you hate it when brothers are there to prove what can be done? I was the same way beginning of last year. I was well over 400 pounds and had a 450 pound brother. He started Atkins Jan 1, and it took me watching him lose over 75 pounds in 4 months to convince me to try it. I had no illusions that I would be successful, but I figured if he could do it so could I. Now 13 months and 176 pounds later, I am nearing my goal.

I couldn't exercise very well I started either. I could barely walk 10 minutes without terrible shin pain. The point is it certainly can be done and has been done by others. I didn't have any magic in losing the weigh unless of course you count the support of ADBB as magical. The one thing us superheavyweights need is perserverence. Doing Atkins is easy (at least I have found it to be), but we need realize we won't be 200 pounds lighter overnight. It takes time for us to reach goal.

One thing is for sure though; if you follow the book and its guidelines, you will be the man you don't think you can be. I know because it certainly happened to me.

Well Hello from a former Montanan! I was raised in Vaughn outside of Great Falls. I also have tons of family in Plaines, Big Timber, and Missoula.

Your story sounds like so many of ours. On the brink of failure knowing we are going to die if we don't do something. I thank God that Atkins worked for me.

I was over 330 pounds, and on a 5'2" frame, lets just say I had a hard time getting around and I looked swollen all the time. I also have four sons, three of them under the age of ten, so I couldn't do the things I wanted to with them. I would get too winded or would need to take a nap because I ran out of energy.

Let me tell you, within two weeks of starting Atkins' I was a different person. After a few months and about 50 pounds lost, I joined the YMCA and began working out. Within a year I was down 95 pounds!! No more naps and I had tons of energy! I had a complete physical including EKG and the results were astounding! My cholesterol was excellent, my heart was healthy, and my blood work was awesome including no Type II Diabetes anymore!!! This way of eating helped change my life.

The same can happen for you my friend. You have to make the decision you are worth it and then set your head and heart one way... towards health. Food is not your friend... it is your fuel or energy. Don't let it rob anymore of your life. You are far to worthy and important to let food take your life!

              We're here for you!

I need to get started....how much of a portion did you guys eat at every meal and was it three times a day or 4 or 5 smaller portions a day?

I know about the walking and the pain especially in my hips....Just have to get motivated! :icondance

I eat three meals per day (and perhaps one snack if I can't make supper). My portion size are generally large enough to keep me full. 8-14 oz steaks, 2 hamburgers, 8 oz of Roast beef are common entrees in my house. Whatever it takes to make you satisfied is really the portion size. Note: there are some specifics with veggies, cream, cheese that have to be obeyed during Induction. I know when I started my portion sizes were huge - one pound of fresh pork sausage or 16oz steaks were not uncommon. Just make sure you are eating about to the correct percentages (65% Fat/30% Protein/5% Carbs -- Fitday.com will really help in tracking), and you should be golden.

As for where I bought my book, the used or half price bookstore are killer. I have found many copies of the 2002 version of DANDR for $1. Other than there, you can find book almost anywhere.

                          Hi Johnny :wave

You found the right place to come. My story is a lot like your's except no heart attack yet. Type II Diabetus, starting weight over 350, I don't know how much because I could not find a scale that went over 350, and living in pain from a back injury. Plus personal care was so difficult I could barely manage it.

Today I am below 350, have lost a tonne of inches, my pain is gone, and personal care is much easier. Plus my clothes are baggy instead of tight and I feel great. I never think about my long term goal of 200+ lbs. I just work at staying on this WOE one day at a time. I measure about twice a month and weight in even less often. I like my tape measure better then any scale, it always has some good news.

My weight loss is very slow but as a result I still feel comfortable in my skin. I don't feel weird and I can adjust the changes more easily.

Be patient, read the book, and eat well. You will feel better soon. :hug

Congrats Johnny on taking the first step to a longer healthier life! I was at deaths door right with you a year ago. Everything was slipping out of my control, and life SUCKED! I was so embarrased when anyone I used to know at 170 pounds saw me at nearly 400 pounds, using a cane, ankles swollen like balloons, body like a whale, and only 29 years old! For my thirtieth birthday, I did Atkins for 6 months, and lost 70 pounds. I'm a new me! You'll soon be a new you! You won't believe the energy you have even just after induction. It took this many years to get this sick, so be patient if it takes a while to get where you want to be, but you will get there! Welcome to the Loser's Lounge! :yes
