  • Hong Kong?

Anyone know if lo-carb products are available over there? I'm heading over for a month or so and don't want to take up my baggage allowance lugging jars of Splenda, etc across the world!! It's hard enough finding these products in the UK tho....
    Any info gratefully received!

    Thanx

Got back from Hong Kong and had a great surprise.....for anyone heading over there Atkins products are in stock all over!

Check out the American Nutrition Company and Health Plus shops in Lan Kwai Fong (Both on Wellington Street, Central) as well as the 15th Floor of the Centrium on Wydham Street - they all stock a wide range of Atkkins and other lo-carb products from Endulge Bars, to Bake mix to lo-carb Crisps, Splenda and sweet as well as savoury sauces!

Oliver's in Princes Building also stocks Atkins Steak sauces, ketchup and other stuff as well as flax meal and original pork rinds!

What a life-saver finding those - much easier to be on induction in Hong Kong than in the UK!!
    Happy travelling

Now that I think about it...there is barely any chinese food that is low carb...from dim sum, to congee, to bubble tea....all that stuff is super high in carbs

Why does chinese food have to taste so good?!?! :anger

rice and noodles make up so much in chinese diet so its strange not eating those foods now. Food is so cheap in HK so i had to go out with my family every day for lunch and it was usually to some chinese restaurant for dim sum, noodle, congee. If you see girls in HK they're stick thin and i mean stick thin.... i wonder how they manage with all that yummy food around them :confused

Food and skinny girls in HK

I know EXACTLY what you mean about the stick thin girls in HK. I was there a few years ago (when I was much thinner) and I left there feeling like the largest Asian woman in the universe.

Although alot of Chinese food is carb heavy, there are also lots of meats that are great as well as the protein snacks that are popular in Asia.
I haven't lived there in a while but I now go to Chinatown to buy bbq roast pork and dried meat or beef/pork jerky. these are great to snack on...

i know what you mean when you feel like you've left there being the fattest woman in the world. It wasn't like i was extremely overweight but the girls in HK are just so damn tiny (tiny waist, stick thin legs which are probably skinner than my arms lol, stick thin arms). You'd never find that many thin girls in one place over here in australia. Girls in HK have this notion that skinny is pretty and even though they're really skinny already they still think they're fat! I was watching some fitness show on a chinese channel TVB and its about people who've lost weight (probably not by dieting cos they go to these clinics and have all these machine work on their body to shape it into the way they are today) and there was this one lady who was on the panel of judges and she's like "looking at you makes me want to lose weight". The host says to the lady judge "how much do you weigh?" and she's like "i've always been fat ever since i was a kid, i'm around 57kg" (she didn't look overweight at all). The hosts then says how much do you want to be? and she's like "i think a healthy weight for me is around 50kg". She's taller than the average asian (Prob around 170cm) and by australian standards thats already underweight. There's just so many asian girls out there who weigh around the low 40s and i think that they're pressured into thinking that they have to be around that weight to look nice. Some asians however a naturally tiny... i know for a fact that all the vietnamese female friends i have weigh around 42-43kg, none of them weigh over 45kg and they eat like pigs and don't gain any weight so i think genetics plays a part in it too.

                  Re: Hong Kong?

FYI, For those traveling to HK, there is a store on Wyndham street in the Centrium building that carries health foods including locally made low carb breads and Atkins products. The Ali Oli bakery in Sai Kung used to have a great low carb bread on their menu and they deliver to your house for free! (certain days of the week). Atkins shakes are available in some of the grocery stores, but there are so many good real foods, I never found it hard to eat out low carb---just pick carefully. It is easier in Western restaurants.

                    Re: Hong Kong?

A little update on Hong Kong's low carb shops:
                    1) The shop in Centrium building that Chinadoll mentioned is sadly gone
                    2) on Wellington Street (Central) there are still at least two shops selling low carb products (American Nutritient Company, and Nature's village), and the latter even sells atkin bars and other useful stuffs.
                    3) Oliver's in Princes Building sells sugarfree syrups that I fail to find it elsewhere in Hong Kong
                    4) Larger groceries often sell low carb candies/ chocolate/ jello, but when I want low carb pasta/ bake mix/ sugarfree ice-cream .etc I couldn't.

Any low carbers in Hong Kong now?

It's intended for everybody, like short-term visitors and long-term residents. Read and contribute in the blog how to live the low-carb life-style in this city. Share in the forum your restaurant tips, food suppliers, nutrition infos,

Why's Atkins an issue in HK ?
Actually it's not, but many people feel the Asian food style is not very "compatible" with Atkins diet. It's maybe a bit true, but there's plenty of ways to manage this still enjoyning Chinese kitchen. And by the way Hong Kong as former British colony keeps lots of opportunities to "do it" in Western style. The challenge remains how to do it ... and this is what this site is about.
