  • Typical Menu In Your Country

I was just wondering what a typical traditional meal in your country consisted of. What do people eat at breakfast, lunch, dinner as a snack, on a picnic etc.? Are there special foods for special days of the week?

I guess I'll go first. Here in Jamaica:

On Sundays people like to cook rice and peas (red kidney beans) with some kind of chicken or roast beef. Sometimes this is with macaroni and cheese pie and a salad.

On Thursdays people like to eat stew peas with pig's tail (or beef). We have a lot of people who do not eat pork. Served with rice.

Saturday tends to be a one pot meal like soup or seasoned rice with meat and veg.

On Friday it is usually some kind of fish. I guess that has a religious base as we eat only fish on Good Friday.

Some traditional desserts include dokkunu which is a batter of cornmeal, brown sugar, rum (of course) and spices. This is wrapped in a banana leaf and boiled. Yummy!! Not Atkins friendly !! :no

How about you others? What's your ethnic food like?

    Mmmmmmmm - okkkk....

So, we don't really eat by the day in the US. I bet a lot of people eat steak on Friday though while going out to dinner.

I love macaroni pie by the way....my sister-in-laws family is from Trinidad and Tobago and they make a mean version! Yum! But alas, not Atkins food for sure....

    Typical American Meals

    Taco Bell
    Burger King
    Wendy's
    McDonald's

Oh wait, you said meals, not who cooks the crap that we eat and will diet from........lol

Before Atkins I lived on Cheeseburgers, fries, soda, pasta with really fattening sauces like alfredo, chips, soda, orange juice, more soda, milk, more soda, white bread, more cheeseburgers, pizza, pizza, pizza, beer, chips, more beer, and then some more beer......and then at 2-3am after the beer and more beer some TACO ****........I mean Taco Bell...to keep it all down........

I ATE THEEEEEEE WORST POSSIBLE AMERICAN DIET EVER!!!!!! No exagerations whatsoever......My most nutricious meals were dinner because I ate at a lot of nice places for my job, but I sure ordered pretty bad there too....just higher quality bad....if that makes sense....lobster cheesecake anyone? Actually that would be good now!!!

    Now,

Beef, Chicken, Fish, Salad, Broccolli, Squash, Cucumbers, Green Beans, Shrimp, Fresh Sausage - (grilled when I have time), and Burgers sans the bun of course.

A typical day mene in England - (I'll base it on a Sunday just for arguments sake).

          Breakfast

Full english. Including - Sausage, Bacon, Fried Eggs, Black Pudding (dried pig blood), hash browns, Fried Bread, tomatoes, baked beans.

          Dinner

A traditional roast meal. Lamb, Beef, Pork, Chicken or even turkey. With veggies

          Tea

          Sandwiches

Obviously not all that atkins friendly but some of it is.

          Rich

It never ceases to amaze me of how easy and how effective this ***diet*** is!!

I have since re-gained a bit of weight, but that is soon to be coming off again!

            OH Rich--"dried pig blood" ewwwww

O.K. in America a for real typical day's menu

            Breakfast=

Bacon, sausage, eggs and toast or "english" muffins certain areas of the country would also have grits (ground corn cooked w/ butter) or cream of wheat.

            Lunch=

usually a sandwich and chips or fries or a Salad such as a Chef salad which has meat and cheese on it. or soup and salad or soup and a sandwich.

            Dinner-

On Friday's alot of folks eat Fish (we did growing up) and yes it was for religious reasons. But the rest of the week it varies. Maybe a steak, salad and bread. Chicken, macaroni and cheese and broccoli. Pot roast which is beef cooked for hours w/ lots of veggies including carrots and potatos until very tender.

I knew someone would pick up on that one. Its not as bad as it sounds really as you do have to cook it. It is very high in carbs though due to the amount of fillers in it.

I'm sure its just one of those things that you sort of have to grow up eating...like pork skins! My dad likes blood sausage -- but he grew up eating it, never made us eat it though!

It really is a cultural thing. People think we are nuts to eat goats or serve fish with the head still on!!! :yikes

oh my god how goooood does that dokkunu stuff sound? Babe you've got me drooling right now. Lucky I just had lunch (mmmm.... tuna in chilli oil with a gorgeous big salad + vinegar....)

Food in Australia is MASSIVELY varied. Especially where I live here in Sydney..... We're a hugely cosmpolitan city, and our tastes in food and eating habits really reflect this.

Thai food is very popular when going out to dinner - it's fabulously communal and makes the whole dining experience a bit less formal but still really yummy!

People like me, who are really into fresh healthy stuff, cook Thai for themselves at home - copying dishes from restaurants or cookbooks or magazines.

                    Of course, barbecues!

And turkish kebabs for those hungover days..... or the 3am desperate search for grease during a big night on the town. :joy Haaha. There are kebab shops that only open from 9pm to 5am in the city.

Oh yes the dukkunu is very special. YUMMY

I also love Thai food. I visited Thailand in 1999 and I absolutely loved the food. It was sooooooo HOT. I figured that coming from the Caribbean the pepper would be ok but that was not the case. Still it was soooo good.

We also barbeque stuff. Our special take on that is Jerk pork/chicken/fish/lobster. Jerk is a method of seasoning meat with peppers, herbs including pimento. Then placing this meat on hot pimento logs to slow cook for hours. The result is very, very spicy, peppery meat, tender and yummy.

Pretty similar in menus to Aussie over here in New Zealand - our summer menu probably consists of the following (I've done it as a typical menu, not low carb)

                        Breakfast:
Weetbix or cereal with fruit or toast and marmite

Lunch: Something light like bread rolls and ham salad

                        Dinner:
BBQ - sausages, lamb chops and steaks with a salad.
