  • Splenda in the UK

    To my fellow UK atkineers.

I dont know if any of you have seen, but in the past few days Splenda has been advertised on the telly.

I would have thought that it will be more readily available in all of our shops. I hope so as my local supermarkets - Sainsburys and Morrisons have both stopped stocking them :yikes

    Just fyi really.

It never ceases to amaze me of how easy and how effective this ***diet*** is!!

I have since re-gained a bit of weight, but that is soon to be coming off again!

    hmmm

I spotted Splenda in Tesco's the other week, along with carb-options casserole mixes and salad dressings.

Im still thinking though that the shops have left it a bit late and think they have missed the boat regarding putting low-carb products in the shops (not that we want frankenfoods). When you think how much Atkins was in the UK media at the end of last year and at the beginning of this one, its gone very quiet now.

Also a major factor is that Splenda is very expensive compared to most store brand sweetners, so its not something that most people would buy.

There will no doubt be a boost in interest after christmas as all the new year dieters come out of their closets, but I highly suspect we will be really struggling to find many low-carb products by then.

I spoke to the owner of my local Holland & Barrats last week as to why they had halved their range of low-carb products and he said that they where phasing it out as the stock was too expensive and didnt sell quickly enough to warrant the amount of shelf space they were giving it.....

A very telling comment I thought..

That's good news about Splenda in the UK. I just hope it reaches us soon. I haven't been able to find it anywhere and we don't have any of the large supermarkets here in Jersey.

I have had no problem getting Splenda in any of the big supermarkets, but the liquid form is unavailable in UK. This means you hav to live with the carb cost of the bulking agent.

Unlike granular Splenda, Liquid Hermesetas has no calorific overhead, and it is the only liquid sweetener to be found in UK

Hermesetas Liquid is only available from independent chemists - and they have to order it - it will arrive from the wholesaler in a few days. Boots does not stock it..

        Hermesetas Liquid
        - Sweeteners: Cyclamate and Sodium Saccharin
        - 10 drops (0,5 ml) sweetens as much as 1 teaspoon (5 g) sugar
        - Suitable for diabetics if fitted into normal daily allowance
        - Zero calories
        - Protects the teeth
        - Can be used for cooking and baking

Hermesetas Liquid contains Per drop (0,05ml) Per 100 ml
        Protein 0 g 0 g
        Carbohydrates, available 0 g 0 g
        Fat 0 mg 0 g
        Energy 0 kJ (0 kcal) 0 kJ (0 kcal)
        Sodium 15.6 mg 1'560 mg

Atkins didn't say 'Calories don't count',
        he said, 'Don't count calories.'
