  • Fourth of July mishap

Please tell me someone else out there did this too...I totally went of the diet/lifestyle change this week with my family in town for the holiday. And I gained 7 lbs maybe more back!!!!! My family eats alot when we get together (which luckily for me isn't often). I ate icecream, fudge, pizza, pasta, ... I don't know why I did this-- maybe because I wanted to eat like everyone else and not be left out, maybe eating these things brings comfort, the food is something I'd have in common with the others, part of me doesn't want to disappoint my family, and now I have to go through the cravings of sugar till I balance out again! I guess I knew I'd cheat a little but it was an all out pig fest! I need to really prepare myself for the next holiday we get together, which I think is Thanksgiving. Any ideas?

Just pick yourself back up! Don't give up! I had a mishap too. Its all about how you handle it from here. Its hard, I know. For the next holiday, maybe you could plan to bring some atkins friendly dishes. Or eat before you go to your family's home so that you're not very hungry.

      Those are great ideas, Sarah!

Hang in there ~ and jump right back on track right away! Holidays are always a challenge, aren't they? I used to pre-plan my cheating based on holidays. "I'll stay on Atkins until my birthday, and then i'll eat whatever i want on that day and get back on track the next day." The problem with me was that the "back on track" the next day wouldn't happen. Then there were "leftovers that had to be finished..." and so on and so forth. So stop right now, pick yourself up - and get back with it! You can do it!!!

I find that what is helping me this time around is that i have ruled out those holidays. And vacations. It just has to be done... so get yourself into a mindset that this is the way things are until you reach your goal. It WILL happen!

Nope, never happened to me. I am never tempted nor do I ever get in situations where I could chat.

<ducking as lightening comes down from sky, fries me to a crisp> <giggle>

Ok, here's what I would do. Think of 5 legal foods that you could contribute to the family meal. Off the top of my head, I would bring devilled eggs, pumpkin souffle, spicy chicken wings, olives stuffed with cream cheese, stuffed mushrooms. My family would be thrilled and I'd have 5 things to eat.

Now, here's my secret for when the fudge, icecream and cake come out. I don't do this regularly, you understand, just maybe 1 time a month or so. Take 1 cup of whipping cream. Add 2 tablespoons of powdered cocoa and splenda to taste. Beat with a hand mixer until really whipped. This is chocolate mousse to die for. I could sit there with a little spoon and take 1/2 hour to eat 1/2 cup. And be happy as a clam, because it's better than cake or icecream!

When the holidays loom there are lots and lots of recipes on the recipe site that will help you out. Be sure to post when they are coming and we can all help you out finding foods that will help you out with this. I didnt find the holidays hard because of all the subsititutes for most of the usual foods that were made. I do make sure there is a dessert that I can have so I dont sit there and salivate while everyone else eats dessert or worse yet eat what I shouldnt.

Finelly.... I usually do that with the plain cream but have never added the cocoa. That would be a nice change for next time. (and so simple that you woulda thunk I woulda thought of it myself!)

When tempted to cheat I keep reminding myself......... chanting if needed............ "I dont want to go thru the sugar detox again"

You can do it! Take one day at a time.

ugh i defintely had about 48 hours of horrible eating. i went to mackinac island (famous for their fudge..there are literally numerous fudge shops every block) and even though i was eating "good" meals, i was binging on the chocolate. so that was no fun. but that is behind me and i am back to my normal low carb self. phew.

okay in other news...i'm still trying to navigate and figure out this new board thing. where are the smiley faces?

Yep---been there done that. Just don't beat yourself up, sweets, and understand you've gained water too. Deviating from plan will cause you to go up, but grabbing control again will bring you success and drop those 7 pounds in a flush---now, stay off the scale until next week, stay on plan, exercise, and keep drinking your water--hang in there! You're not alone!

Ps....don't forget to preplan, and over plan your adventures and future holidays!

Thank you for all your encouragement! Today, I will start the sugar detox and I will jump back on the wagon. I do feel alot better when I am low carbing it. And for the woman who went to Mackinaw (spelling?)- I've been there- it's hard to pass those shops! And for the person who wanted to know where the smiley faces are--when you post a note look to your right and double click on one of those faces and it'll appear in your note. Thanks again!

Oh I SO know your pain! For me what works is the mindset that Dammit it took me almost a whole month to shed these 10 pounds, I'm a slow loser, so one weekend/week of carb binging would undo all that I had accomplished that painfully slow month. It definatly helps to keep me on track. Don't get me wrong, the day I reach 5 lbs under goal, I'll probably binge on junk for a whole day to celebrate hahahahahahaha, but not til then, and then after that...only once in a blue moon. This woe is for life for me.

I know! It took me a month to lose that weight and five days undid all that! this woe is for life for me too and I've accepted that. It's like someone's quote on here (I'm not sure of the exact wording): I'm allergic to sugar, it causes fat. It helps to know other people are in the same boat! And thanks for the advice to drinks more water- I'll do that.

so... how many days did you eat like this? how long did it take you to put on over 7 pounds....

please let us know how many days it takes you to lose it again.... I am sure it will fall right off when you resume Atkins and drink lots of water..

that food sounded awfully tempting...but only if you can take it off as quickly as you put it on...

I know.... I know....I am awful to think this way.... but I am hungry! it is close to dinner time... and I missed lunch

Sure I'll let you know how long it takes to lose this weight. Although I've promised myself that I wouldn't look at a scale for a week to two weeks. It takes me a long time to lose weight so, I don't expect a miracle. I probably ate like that for up to a week. Some of it I know is water weight because it was also that time of the month for me and I always get really bloated. Anyway, I drank lots of water yesterday and will continue to do that because I think it helped with the sugar detox like someone mentioned. Thanks again for the encouragement!

Being prepared ahead will ensure that you don't have this bad carb meltdown again. I used to buck the system too, until I relaized that I was only cheating myself. Once I got with the program, and stopped making excuses for myself, I started seeing results. Good Luck! Just tell yourself that you can have all those bad evil junk items some day (in moderation) just not today...and not for awhile. C'mon now, jump back in with both feet and get rockin!
