  • Doing well... getting sick!

So I started out very good. Absolute cheat free induction for about 4 or 5 weeks. And then, waking up in the morning not feeling to well. Went to the bathroom and all **** broke lose! Within 2 1/2 hours I was completely wasted. I had nothing left in my system. When I had to I got a scary tingling feeling going down my arms and legs all the way down to my fingers and toes.
That day I ate nothing, I did sip water during the day to keep from hydrating. Next day I still didn't want to eat. Just the thought of eggs and bacon YUK!
So my dear hubby got some crackers. He said I HAD to eat something otherwise I would never get better. Don't I just love him, but that moment I couldn't care less.
Anyway, for two days I did ate some crackers and felt like I had fallen of the Atkins wagon! I had lost 2 kg and actually I was happy about that. Because my weightloss is not that fast, I could use a breakthrough.
But dear o dear, please not like this!
Anyone have been sick to the stomach so bad you can't eat fatty foods? Curious about you solve this problem...

Haven't experienced the stomach flu on Atkins, but it must be awful.

How about sticking to clear liquids for 24 hours? Soup, sugar-free jello....

I think, but not sure, that this experience will not throw you out of ketosis. I know that whenever I've had the stomach flu for several days, my dr. checks my urine to see if there are ketones, not for Atkins, obviously, but because I've consumed nothing for awhile....

The first priority is to let your entire digestive system REST, which is why the clear liquids. Then you could progress to soft-boiled eggs, etc.

Hang in there, honey! This, too, shall pass....

I have not had the oppurtunity to be that sick on Atkins but if you are that sick the best thing for you to do it concentrate on getting better. It is hard to think about eating anything let alone high fat items. Have you tried broth to get something in your system? I usually have some homemade chicken soup in my freezer. Or some SF jello. I know the jello is a sweet thing but it gets something in you so that you dont dehydrate. (This is not great Atkins advise ahead........... but........... crackers always help when one has a stomach issue, Im sure you arent eating them by the box ........... getting better is the priority and then you can jump right back into full fledged Atkins when you are feeling better)

Hopefully someone with more ideas will come along soon with other suggestions. HTH

I've never had this problem with Atkins before either. Have you called your doctor? It may be worthwhile to go in for a visit. Hope you feel better!!!!

          Re: Doing well... getting sick!

The first time I was on Atkins, two years ago. I was so DEATHLY sick i missed two days of work. I couldn't move. I vomited until i had the dry heaves. I only drank water, because i had heard of others that had it as bad! My head throbbed, my body was weak and food of any kind was the last thing i wanted. BUT DRINK WATER, it will flush all that yucky stuff right out of you. And don't give up, it just means its working!! So overall....ITS A GOOD SIGN!! This time around, didn't feel nearly as sick, but didn't have that much "garbage" in me. When i fell off the first time, i would go through stages of junk and then be real good about what i ate. I was more "prepared" this time around to start out my WOE!!
Hang in there, your going to be feeling better SOON!! and your going to like what see and what you feel!!!
chin up!!! You can get through this!!! I did!!
          happy losing to us all!!

              Re: Doing well... getting sick!

I got sick within 1 month of doing Atkins - but it wasn't from Atkins. Yes, the change to my body didn't help, but I had the flu and strept throat. I just drank a lot of water and slept the whole time. I got over it and felt wonderful. I also made an induction safe veggie beef soup which helped as I was able to stomach things. I know someone who's body resisted a lot of fat and she couldn't do Atkins because of it - I thought it was silly, but maybe some peoples bodies do resist fat?

Hang in there, it may just be a coincidence that you are sick...

                Re: Doing well... getting sick!

Thank you so much for your reactions, great supportteam!
I don't think it was Atkins related. Maybe it was something I ate the night before (a salad with chicken at the gym) or it was something 'in the air' and I just was unlucky to catch it.
Funny, while (I can't say or write the word, aaarrrgghhh) which was only water in the beginning so my stomach was empty, I noticed I didn't smell that yuk smell... I was clear what I threw out and it even smelled clear. Isn't that weird?? The other thing on the potty was mainly water also, flushing with it my inner pipes clean .

I'm so much better now and totally back on track. I was very much in ketosis right after I was sick. But I guess that's naturally when you haven't eaten much...

Anyway, thanks again. And I can now feel with anyone with the flu (this was my first time since AGES. I can't remember the last time I felt so terrible).

                    Re: Doing well... getting sick!

My experience has been when very sick the diet goes out the window. A few days on english muffins and tea isn't going to kill you, and you would probably lose weight anyway. Once better you can resume!

Ok I know the Atkins die hards are going to kill me for this

English muffins and tea wouldn't be our advice no Bill lol. There are recipes for vegetable soup on Lindas site, keep it light eating broth until you can stomach veggies, then try the veggie soup. It works well for me when I'm sick. English Muffins would surely derail me.

If you feel you could only stomach something like crackers how about flax crackers?
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Anyway, everything is ok now. I just was wondering how any of you handled situations like this. Thanks again.
