  • Retaining water bigtime

    Hi all-

I thought maybe some of you might know what is going on. I started atkins last tuesday - I was starting to pee a lot by thursday, and was really thirsty all the time. Now it's sunday, and I've been drinking enough water to float a boat and *not* going to the bathroom much. I'm SO dehydrated, my lips are chapped and I have that funky dehydration feelng in my head. My hands are really dry. But I drank like 130 ounces of water yesterday and probably went to the bathroom about 5 times which is about how much I'd go on a non-atkins day with maybe 1-2 cups of water. I only have about 20 pounds to lose, so 130 ounces should be *plenty* of water.

WHAT is going on? I haven't lost any weight, i can tell. My clothes are fitting *tighter* than usual. I know it's water causing it by the way my skin is bulging out. My period should be coming in about 9 days, but I don't usually get PMS til about the day before. I've been exercising more than usual, would that make me retain water?

I'm so frustrated!!! I feel like a giant water bottle!

    WOW!

Sounds like you are in line for a big whoosh. But how to get it?

Apparently, asparagus and horseradish are diuretics...might try eating some of either of those....

And keep drinking water. Perhaps add a little more fat to your menu today. Oftentimes, if I go below 68% fat, I start to retain fluid.....

Keep us posted throughout the day.....

Wish I had more suggestions for you. A little lemon in your water perhaps? It should act as a diuretic too.

But by all means keep the water up. I learned when I had toxemia when I was carrying my son that I could drink the fluid away. (Dr also told me that laying on my left side makes your heart pump fluids out more efficiently)

And let us know when that mother of a whoosh shows up!

OKay update number one: I drank a big glass of water when i got up, and had lunch. Then i went to the bathroom TWICE!!! went to lay out, and had to go again, but i held it for a while since I wasn't anywhere near a bathroom.

I think it might be going away now though. Although I drank a liter of water since then and nothing, but we'll see!

You arent sunburned are you? Im guessing not if you are still laying in the sun. But if you were that could be why you are retaining water. I find that if I burn I retain water for a few days.

          Just a thought........

nope, although i did get a bit burnt today. But up til now it's been fine. Not sure what happened today, was there a hole in the ozone right above me? ;-P

I did play an hour and a half of tennis on friday where I wore myself out completely. I took water breaks but probably didn't drink enough. It seems like this is when this started. I had a HORRIBLE headache on friday night that I alleviated by drinking water til I thought I'd puke. ;-P

Exercise will cause you to retian water especially if you feel sore the next day basically your body stores extra fluid in the sights of inflammation on your muscles and thus causes a weight gain or fluid retention. As your body becomes more adapted to exercise you will not notice the retention as much. Also when you exercise you also need to drink a lot more water so with your current activity you may not be drinking enough even though it seems like it especially if you sweat a lot or exercise in intensive heat.

Beverages containing caffeine and alcohol have a diuretic effect, and several other foods including celery, onion, eggplant, asparagus and watermelon are said to have a diuretic effect. In addition, the herbs hawthorn, corn silk, and parsley are used as diuretics in natural medicine. Of these, hawthorn, (crataegus oxycanthus) is the most powerful. Are you premenstral? Have you been eating more salt lately. Tons of stuff could be the problem, but if you get anymore sympton call andtalk to your doctor about it.
I think though, Induction does affect folks some, either one way or the other.

                  Re: Retaining water bigtime

I had this EXACT problem last week. When I weighed in at the gym on Wednesday I had GAINED 2 pounds! I was so distraught because I had done so well over the holiday and never missed my workouts and it just didn't seem fair.

Friday, drank my 5 bottles of water at work as usual, but was going to the bathroom every 15-20 minutes and each time you would have thought it was the first time for the day! I didn't understand where all the water was coming from!

By the end of the day Friday I could literally feel the change in my weight so I got on my scale out of curiosity. I lost 2 pounds! I was happy, and realized it was just water retention.

My bathroom episodes continued the rest of the night, and by this morning, I had LOST 3 pounds! So...don't get discouraged. This too shall pass....

                          Re: Retaining water bigtime

wooohoooo! This morning, I measured myself (it being monday and all) and I whooooshed! Lost 5.75 inches this week, but only half a pound. That's kind of annoying, although I guess it's 2.5 pounds really from tuesday morning (i weighed myself wednesday and used that as my start weight).

Lost an inch off my waist from yesterday morning, this is how I know I whooshed.

Still, I know it's silly but I'd rather lose pounds than inches. Must be all this exercise, I guess. I'm building muscle! I have a tendency to build muscle VERY easily, so I'll have to be careful - I end up looking like a linebacker if I'm not careful. :/

I think if you keep up your water intake your body will balance itself out. But just hang in there I'm sure your body is waiting for the right time to let go of some weight..
