  • STAC and OWL

After my poll yesterday about what stage we are all in and observations of all of the stac members, it got me thinking about all of us second time around people and OWL. It seems like a lot of our members are on induction or extended induction.

The reason I fell off the wagon the first time, was because I didn't follow OWL correctly. I didn't do the ladder, carb creep got to me, etc. I actually had myself convinced that I was still in extended induction, when I wasn't! I was adding in little bits of food here and there. Is that why a lot of us are on our second (or more) go around? Because we didn't move into OWL or follow it correctly? If this is true, we all need to look at what we are doing and learn from our mistakes from the first time around.

Well, at least that is why I believe I failed the first time. I guess my point, is that we all need to look at ourselves and what caused us to fail. Let's not make the same mistakes again!

I'm just curious, what were your mistakes and do you have a plan to avoid making those mistakes again?

Myself, I am not sitting in extended induction forever adding in things here and there, pretending that I am doing Atkins right. I have moved into OWL and I am doing it by the book. I am counting my carbs. I am following the rules and the rungs. I am now commited to OWL and doing it correctly.

    Re: STAC and OWL

My first time around was screwed up by more mental issues than anything else. I let things (ie. stress) influence my food choices. This time around, I'm trying to channel my emotions into better things. So, if I'm upset I force that emotion out by exercising, by talking with DH, by spending some extra time with my DS (just seeing how he reacts to the world is enough to take my mind off food) and of course, venting with my buddy and those of you on this board!

I'm still on extended induction because I have a large amount of weight to lose. And, like most, I'm a little nervous to move on to OWL. However, I am prepared to make some chages and move forward if I start to get bored with my meals, or if I stall.

Great topic Nikki!!! Congrats on your success with OWL so far!!

      Sarah,
You reminded me that I was going to talk about being scared of OWL in the original post. That was part of my failure. And that is why I convinced myself I was still in extended induction and I never did OWL correctly. This time around, I have plunged into OWL, showing no fear! I put my trust in Dr. A that he knew what he was talking about. And now I LOVE OWL! There is nothing to fear!

Glad you have identified that your failure was an emotional thing and that you have a plan on how to deal with it this time around! Being prepared is key!

I can say that I was a vitcim of moving too quickly up the ladder and carb creep. I'm starting OWL over with the veggies. However, before I made this committment BF went to Costco and bought a huge basket of strawberries so I'm trying to figure out what to do with them. Any suggestions?

I hadn't thought of moving too quickly up the ladder. How fast were you going through the rungs? Just curious.

          Thanks for sharing!

I think I may have stayed in a rung for a week. But I know where I went wrong--I ate the new foods more than 3x a week.

I just plain woulnd't eat the strawberries...don't touch them! Let your BF figure out what he's going to do with them! This attitude is probably why I am single.

              Can you freeze strawberries?

Pretty sure you can freeze strawberries, Nikki.

Coco, that is probably what I would do. Its so hard to break the old habits.

LOL--BF is allergic to strawberries so I know he's not going to touch them. I just don't want to waste money.

Freeze those suckers for when you can have them! Slice them up and put into zip lock bags for future use. You will feel better once they are frozen.

                      Re: STAC and OWL

I totally have had problems with following the program in the past because i would stay on induction for too long and then burn out. I hope this time will be different. Honestly, i have no idea what to do on OWL. I should read that part of the book soon. (Never even got that far before!) I guess i will tread slowly and keep up coming to the board for help and support when i get there. The longest i have been on Atkins was for a month and a half. It will be a month this Sunday for me... so i'll have to be careful!
