  • not enough fat?

Hi! Okay so I returned to this lifestyle about two months ago and thought I was doing great. Yesterday was the first day I used fitday.com and I realized I'm not getting enough calories or fat, and too much protein and carbs. See here
    http://www.fitday.com/WebFit/PublicJournals.html?Owner=kbuchs

My cholesterol is really high so I am concerned about eating regular stuff as opposed to reduced fat. A big problem for me is fat on meat- I can't eat it, it grosses me out. So, I think I will get the regular cheese instead of part skim, put olives on my salads, and use more margarine (or does it have to be butter- I am worried about that cause of my cholesterol). Does anyone else have any ideas?

First of all, your cholesterol will go DOWN on this woe. Margarine is bad for you - it is one molecule away from being PLASTIC. Dr. Atkins stressed that you must eat butter, not margarine, whole fat cheeses, not reduced fact cheeses, cream, not milk, and eggs, not egg whites.

I get fat from: olive oil, olives, eggs (up to 8 or 10 a day if I'm not eating meat), chicken skin (when I eat meat, maybe 3 times a week), sour cream, cream, butter, cheddar cheese, feta cheese, cream cheese.

While initially your cholesterol level may rise, it quickly goes down and you would not BELIEVE the number of people who get to eliminate their cholesterol-lowering meds within a few months of going on this woe!

I personally find that hovering around 70% fats on a daily basis is how I lose weight and inches.

Don't be afraid to try it! Meat fat and meat skin is not the only way to add it to your menu, you are quite right. Experiment and see what you can add and what tastes good!

Your cholesterol might well go down if you do the diet properly, which means full fat all the time!

margarine is just bad in general and as a matter of principle. ;-P Butter is the way to go.

I understand about not being able to eat the fat on meats - I do'nt eat it either. However, I can eat hamburgers and steaks and pork, i just cut off the edge of fat.

My cholesterol was something like 340 last time I got it checked (pre-atkins). My parents as well. After a year of atkins their cholesterol (and Blood Pressure) went down practically to normal. That's what I'm hoping for!

      Fatty things you can eat:
      mayo
      blue cheese dressing
      cheese
      olive oil
      butter
      cream cheese
      nuts (if you're on OWL)
      cream
meats that I tend to eat:
      ground beef and lamb
      chicken
      pork chops
the occasional steak for a special occasion

      Fish:
      salmon (good fatty fish)
      tuna
      shrimp, scallops, etc...

Put cream in your spinach, put cheese on top of your broccoli, etc... Forget low fat. Go to your doctor and get your cholesterol checked. Do the diet properly for a couple of months (do'nt worry about fat), and then go back and see how things changed. If it goes up, then maybe reduce your fat.

Also, salt is related to high BP and cholesterol, more than people think (in my opinion), so watch your sodium!

        Re: not enough fat?

After 2 years eating this way my LDL is so low it's off the chart.
All my other #'s are incredible.
If you want to lower cholesterol this is the way to go (a non doctor's opinion)
However to get the full lowering benefits you need to do significant exercise and up the fiber.

okay so I printed out all your responses so that I can look at it every time I start to question what I'm doing. I'll add more fat and see what happens! It is strange though. Anyway, thanks for your responses and ideas they were really helpful!
